I don't see how a local calling area that covers 2 whole states can be the smallest. I have never seen a local calling area that large in Chicago or here in Greenville. I roam with my phone and I don't have any problems unless I am in an area that traditionally doesn't have coverage, like in the hills of my hometown, Huntington, WV. Check the website if you have doubts.

I'm in Greenville fairly frequently to visit family and would rate alltel and Verizon about equal and at&t just a little bit behind, especially indoors in several places just from my experience carrying a phone from each. I've never tried Sprint but I don't know anybody that's ever bragged on Sprint like you hear with other providers.
I personally prefer alltel because you can get much more in a plan with more minutes for the price, my circle, and nights at 7 for $7 is another option. I picked up alltel for My Circle, the unlimited calling to 10 numbers, and will probably cancel Verizon when my current contract is up because there's no better coverage so it's not worth the extra cost to me. The coverage with alltel even seems even a little better once you get out of the city into more rural areas. As others have said, alltel is not new and has the largest native network in the US. Perhaps you've just not noticed them before as I really don't see as many commercials for them as I do for Verizon or At&t so I don't think the perception is that they're a large provider. But in the Carolinas, including Greenville, in my humble experience, their coverage is generally very good and not usually outdone.
Sorry for posting so late, until I posted I didn't notice the dates of the other posts. Maybe it'll help in some way, or somebody will come across it later.

Another Alltel convert! YES!
I never heard of Alltel in Chicago either. I believe all systems have problems; it just seems I have less of them with Alltel.

I just signed a 2 yr contract with AT&T in July and the sales rep said the only place I won't be able to get a signal in on Mars! I have so many rollover minutes that I wonder why I even have a cell phone, except I can't imagine being without one either. What about areas in the mountains like Traveler's Rest or Pickens? Is it harder to get a good signal?

You won't get a signal on Mars- or at Table Rock Park. From what I've been told, there is NO cell service there. I know that AT&T and TMobile don't work there. On our property, 5 miles north of Traveler's Rest, we get 5 bars. The Table Rock area is the only place my AT&T phone lost signal.

Thank you! I feel a lot better now. I know I've posted about many areas, since I really need to spend a lot of time looking around, but Traveler's Rest is sounding better and better to me. Maybe I should rush up and "grab" a house since there aren't too many in my limited price range!

Wow- someone here knows of T-Mobile!!!
Still have my service with them after moving here- granted it bounces to SunCom the moment I hit the SC line when driving back from GA- but with my current plan- it's not roaming, unlimited long distance, never have a problem connecting and can still access my T-Zones and everything else on the Blackberry...

I recently switched from Verizon to AT&T (after almost 10 years with Verizon) and I wish I'd done it years ago. The reception with AT&T for me is FAR superior to Verizon and I've had no dropped calls, which I had frequently with Verizon. I also switched from an LG phone to a Razr phone and I have been very happy with it. The razr has the longest talk time without having to recharge it.
