Skyliner -BEAUTIFULLL!!!!!!
Skyliner those pictures are so beautiful!! Thank you for reminding me how beautiful the upstate is!! It gave me the motivation I needed to get things done around the house to get it ready to put up for sale!! Iwas wondering if you could tell me of some nice small towns with a "main street" that would be worth looking at in the Upstae. I grew up in a small town and love old homes and would like to try to find something like that in SC. We would like to be within 1/2 hour of greenville but a little further like 45 min would be alright too! Thank you again ,Bonnie

My kind of place????
To all on the great photo thread, especially clgrimes who used to live in Arlington, VA. I am in the process of checking out the Greenville area for retirement (a relative term) in about one year. I'm coming down in early August to check the place out in person. I am a Naturalist / Natural Resource Specialist by trade. I've been a park ranger, park manager, interpreter, and currently I'm conducting a Natural Heritage Resouce Inventory of Arlington County in northern Virginia. I am into native plants, plant commuitiies, and wildlife. I just completed putting together a Champion Tree Program up here. With this kind of background, do you think Greenville would be a place for me considering my love and knowledge of the outdoors. Not sure if I'll have to work or not (hopefully will be a choice). I live simply, like to garden (vegetables and native plants), am married with couple of dogs, but do need a good hospital (for the wife) not far away. What do you think?

^^I couldn't think of a better place personally. There are more parks, lakes, and trails around this area than I can count, Greenville Hospital System is the largest hospital network in the state, and downtown has a big dog park where you can take them to play.

There are a number of great parks along the escarpment of the Blue Ridge, which basically runs along Rte. 11 on the NC border. You can still buy reasonable acreage within easy distance of Greenville. We have 7 acres north of Traveler's Rest, and we are about 15 miles from downtown. We clocked it at 25 minutes from our property to the main hospital (my wife will work there). Even closer in, you can get good deals on land or a house with a few acres to play on. We are excited about moving up in a couple years, and enjoying nature and wildlife in our own back yard! There's a wide variety of terrain in a fairly small area, from the relatively flat areas east of Greenville to some real mountains, esp. just over the border into NC. We were attracted to the combination of natural beauty, reasonable real estate, and proximity to a sizable city for work. Although I normally shun cities, downtown Greenville simply has to be seen to be appreciated. I think you'll like the areas to the north of Greenville best.

Wow, Skyliner, you've done it again! Greenville must be an amazing place to live and I can't wait to visit there. Like clgrimes and carex I lived in Arlington for many years - grew up there but wouldn't want to live there now. We loved going to Skyline Drive for the scenery, too, and moved there 14 years ago. Huge mistake! There is relatively little to do there so a couple of years ago we moved to Winchester, VA which is really nice but expensive.
Thanks to everyone who shared fabulous pictures with those of us who want to move there. I've never seen a city that is so nice.

Hello, I will be moving to South Carolina
Hello, I will be moving to South Carolina.I am in process of selling my home in Rhode Island and taking some of my profits to an area that I can breath in (financially). I would like to live an area similar to where we live now. It is very rural, Horses, cows, small farms etc. I reaally would like to start over with less bills and less taxes. I would like to spend under 200,000. I checked out greenville, simpsonville, and greer. However the house lots appear rather small. I would like to have at least 2 acres of land and within at least 30 to 40 minutes from the city. I live in a restored historical home right now and my wife would like something quaint also. She is not interested in the plat neighborhoods going up in the greenville area. However, she does like the shops etc. Any ides please repond. Thanks Agian,

You need to look north of Greenville. We bought 7 acres about 5 miles north of Traveler's Rest, and it only takes 25 minutes to get downtown. To the south and east of Greenville is much more built up. Try Easley, Pickens, Traveler's Rest, and other towns in that direction. That whole side of town is hillier and more rural than the other side. We bought raw acreage; with a careful budget, our total lay-out will be under $200K. I haven't seen many quaint homes out in the country, though. I grew up in a 200 y/o house in CT, so I know where you're coming from. I would recommend a visit, and drive all over everything between Rte. 11 and Greenville. I think you'll like it!

I would like to welcome you to the upstate. It's a wonderful place. I live in Westminster, SC. We are approx. 45 minutes from Greenville on 123 West. My brother comutes to Greenville everyday and has done so for many years. Westminster is a great town. With a wonderful main street. Check it out as Westminster - Westminster South Carolina. We are a small town of and home town proud. The SC Apple Festival is coming up Labor Day. Come by and enjoy the festivities. That goes out to everybody.
