Sans Souci is not the project. When I say a former mill neighborhood, you have to understand that from just after the civil war until probably the 1960s Greenville's predominant industry was textile mills. Sans Souci was not a classic "mill hill", but most people who lived there worked at either the Union Bleachery (which bleached and died raw cotton fabric) or Stone Manufacturing, which manufactured clothing. The houses were small and modest. Over time, some have been improved on (and the initial construction was often quite good), and some have fallen into disrepair. You'll find a lot of people renting houses in Sans Souci, some people who have lived there for years, and some who are looking for an inexpensive place that they can fix up.

Actually, it sounds like it has gotten a bad rap. I think it sounds quaint and modest. I would rather live their than in a hoity-toity garden apartment. I know that makes me sound hostile, but I have a real respect for working class people. My parents have blue collar roots. I am the only college education in my family, with the exception of my father. Other than my dad and I, my family consists of Ellis Island Sicilian and Hungarian immigrants from NJ who worked factory jobs. Both grandfathers died from factory related lung conditions.

I just returned from an excursion to check out both of your streets, hollimarie.
It is hard to go on looks alone, but both neighborhoods appear to be similar, with the exception that the Sans Souci area immediately around the home you are looking at appears to be better kept. I feel that I may have spoken rather hastily yesterday regarding this place, but it is still located near an area (the "Westside") with a higher crime and poverty rate than most of Greenville. With that said, I would definitely check it out and consider moving to Sans Souci over the home in Easley, if for no other reason than its much closer proximity to your job. I snapped a photo of the home you are looking at in Sans Souci and will try to get it posted for you sometime today or this evening.

thank you so much!!!
Skyliner:
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to check out both areas for me!!! We are going to SC tomorrow, and probably will head out to Easley tomorrow night, and have the appointment set for the San Souci house on Thursday morning. The only up side about the Easley house is that the landlord is a very nice person is willing to spread out my deposit over a larger period of time..and will eventually let me buy the house...Which does intrigue me because rent is not tossed away.
I am leaning towards San Souci, but the deposit is so much steeper. I will just have to walk around both houses and go with my gut instinct. Of course, my husband has a say too. He's ambivalent about the Easley home for two reasons: Distance from work and the fact that it uses natural gas in the central heating..Not an issue for me, being from NJ, that's quiet common.
Looking forward to seeing the photos.

Okay, I realize that yesterday I had promised to post the photo, but circumstances prevented that from happening. I hope today is not too late though. Here is the photo of the house you may be looking at on Hubert Street in San Souci:

don't know why but I periodically check houses on craigslist and I came across the house that skyliner posted yesterday, don't know if its the one u r looking at but there are some pics of the inside, here's the link Cherrydale Rental House-Near Everything! No Appplication Fee
P.s. Cherrydale is a great little oasis in the greenville westside, with nice restaurants and shopping. I live sort of near there and I go there all the time

Hey there Noodles!
Love the picture!! Guess what? I got the house in Easley, and it's a doll house! I am going to post it with this message. We didn't even bother going into San Souci after we went to the Easley house first. It was our dream home....And in a year we will have the option of owner-financing. I already met some neighbors and made a friend there! I love Easley..It's quiet, and I am walking distance from the little main street that has a non-chain book store, art emporium (where I can take some watercolor classes!), and a trendy little cafe that I can't wait to try. Everything we need is there, and it will give me breathing room away from my job. I just fell in love with this house...and the street is cute--albeit very narrow..But I love the two oak trees that shade our entire front yard...and it's so nice to not hear sirens and people shouting out drug deals from our living room window. (As we have here in our apartment in Kingsport.) Our landlord literally told us to get into his car and he showed us around Easley after five minutes of looking at the house. It just felt right. Thanks for posting the picture for me though. I think you will understand why I picked the home in Easley! (excuse the lack of cropping. My husband scanned the photo, and I haven't had a chance to tweak it. The picture was taken on a cheap disposable camera.)
