I am thinking about moving to greenville S.c. from Staten Island, N.Y.. I have an Autistic 7 year old daughter, who is in a special ed school. She in in a small class with 5 other children. She has a one to one para and recieves speech 5 times a week, occupational therapy 5 times a week, and physical therapy 5 times a week. She also goes to a autistic play group on saturdays for 2 hours and goes to girl scouts with other disabled children. The resources are great here in N.Y. for children with any disabilities. I am worried about the schooling and resources in Greenville S.c. and would appreciate any information and input from people who have a special needs child. My daughter would not thrive being mainstreamed and needs to be in a special ed school, but Im not sure if Greenville offers special ed only schools. I would love to relocate to the south, but want to be sure my daughter has the opportunities, training, and therapies she needs to continue to improve. If anyone has any insight into the special ed schooling and resources, I would love to hear from you. My daughter also goes to a fantastic summer camp, where she in a small group with other autistic children and has the chance to socialize with other children. I just dont want to relocate to an area where there are no services, sports , playgroups specifically for autistic children. I also heard that its very hard to get speech, physical and occupational therapy through the schools. I would appreciate any information anyone can give me. Thank you, maria
My daughter was receiving speech therapy for 2 years in our public school system (even though she was not even in the school yet) before we moved down here. In Oct. (she started K in Aug.) I was told that the paperwork she had from up north did not apply down here and that she would need to be re-tested. I was also told that the required paperwork would be filled out by her teacher so that the process could get started. After not hearing anything from the school for a month, I tried contacting the teacher several times with no response. I finally got an email on Dec. 17th stating what I already new--that she would have to start from scratch and get re-tested. Seeing as this email was sent to me the evening they went on break, I will not be able to contact anyone until after Jan. 1st. School ends in May. IMHO, it is NOT easy to receive services through the public schools!

I don't understand. Why are you wanting to relocate? Job?

Before answering any of your questions specifically related to your daughter, I would like to ask a few questions first.
You have shared a fair amount of detail regarding your daughter's needs, yet very little about your own life, which is critical for her overall psychological wellness. What is your primary source of income? How long have you lived in NY or in the North? Why do you want to relocate away from New York? Why would you love to live in the South? Based on your post, it seems you have heard about the schools here, but what led you to consider Greenville, SC, in the first place? Are you currently receiving and/or are you hoping to receive financial assistance beyond the federal or state level?
Here is a bit of information that may help answer your questions.
Two excellent local sources for a wealth of helpful information are, Project Hope Foundation and the Autism Resource Guide (http://www.cdservices.org/Forms%20and%20Documents/AutismResourceGuide09.pdf - broken link) (.pdf format) from the Center for Developmental Services (aka CDS).
Greenville does have excellent schools that provide education for the special needs of autistic children.
More information:
Social services are good (plentiful) here in NYC because we pay plenty of taxes to have them for those who need them. Not the same in the south....most of the residents are opposed to paying higher taxes, especially for social services....as a result many of the amenities you have here in NYC does not exist in the south. Unfortunately too many in the south believe that using tax dollars to pay for services that help the poor, elderly or handicap is a waste of money. The other thing to keep in mind is that you are considering moving from a wealthy state to a poor state.......complete difference.
Speaking from experience.....moved from NYC to SC...lived in Greenville a few years....moved back to NYC about a year ago. Greenville is not the place you want to live and end up needing assistance.

Why are people dying on the streets in NYC if the social services are plentiful there because people who work hard to earn a living are forced to give more to the government? In my opinion, people living and working in New York give too much of their hard-earned income to the government. Also in my opinion, a surprisingly large amount of people living in the Upstate of South Carolina give a significant portion of their lives and hard-earned income to specific local charitable organizations that efficiently and effectively meet the needs of poor, elderly, and handicapped people living in the community. I have seen the overall inefficiency and ineffectiveness of government assistance throughout my entire life.

What specific amenities are you referring to?

Again, how do you account for the large number of homeless roaming the streets and subways in NYC? Furthermore, what about the high percentage drop-out rate in NYC public schools? If everything is so great in that city because its citizens are forced to give more of their money to the government, then why are so many people there struggling to financially support themselves and their families because the state's wealth is not meeting their needs through its plentiful social services?

In addition to the several links I provided in my initial reply to the original post, here (http://www.greenvillehd.com/greenville-sc-charities - broken link) are a few other great local charititable organizations and events in the Greenville area. Others can be found here and here.

I am wondering, what is your problem? If you did not like it here, why do you stay on this board? Greenville is a special place to live and raise a family. That is why so many from the north are moving here, and staying here. This is a loving, caring and giving community. We don't have to count on taxes to help those that need assistance. We take care of those with our own time and our own money, the way it should be done.
NewYorkBorn wrote, "Social services are good (plentiful) here in N.Y.C. because we pay plenty of taxes to have them for those who need them". Never mind that state-sponsored WELFARE (Social Services funded via taxation) diminishes the inclinations of both the GIVER and the GIVEN. No, the CRIME of the modern Welfare State is more basic. As JAMES MADISON put it, "With respect to the words "general welfare", I have alwars regarded them as qualified by the details of powers (enumerated in the Constitution) connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character, which there is a host of proof, was not contemplated by its creators. I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that Article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." That is the statement of James Madison, the author of the Constitution...and HIS OPINION IS UNIMPEACHABLE! The Government has no Constitutional mandate to FORCE me via excessive taxation to pay for social services (welfare) for those who need them.

Funny you posted this just three days before the huge blizzard that hit the NYC area. The news stations have been devoting 90% of their time to stories dealing with streets not being plowed and residents being trapped in their homes. For all those taxes being paid, and for the excellent social services you claim exist there, I'd be pretty ticked off if I were a resident and my street had not been plowed several days after a storm.
skyliner The reason I was inquiring about greenville, is because I had lived in charlotte n.c.17 years ago and visited s.c. as well and thought the pace and quality of life in the south was fantastic. The cost of living in S.I. N.Y. is astronomical. Although i own my own townhome, I always wanted to raise my children in a large home with a beautiful yard. The starting prices for homes here are 550,000 if you want a yard. As far as social services, i work and support my own children,my only concern was the schooling and what the public schools offered for disabled children. I have paid for all my daughters activities and therapies and summer camp and am not expecting anyone to support my disabled child. After living in a very rushed, hectic and overcrowded community I felt moving south would be perfect for my family. I did hear about washington center school and continue to research schools in the area. Some people do want to leave a frenzied enviroment for a more laid back community. thank maria
