I grew up in Greenville, and I don't wave at someone unless I know them. I also rarely get waved at by someone I don't know. Perhaps it depends on the area of Greenville, because what you describe sounds funny to me.

Our property is out in the boonies, near Tigerville, and many people wave, especially on the small back roads. Whenever we visit our property, people tend to stop by to chat. I think it's part friendliness, and part checking out a strange car in the neighborhood. We used to travel through rural Georgia a lot, and wondered why everybody waved. It turned out they were just waving the gnats away!
