We are moving from upstate NY to start a job at Shaw Air Force Base. We need advice as to what areas to look for a home. We would like to know about rural areas to buy a home with at least 1 acre of land. Any advice for community colleges in the area? Our son graduates in June and will start College in Fall. He wants to remain stay in NY, we want him to look into possibilities in S. Carolina.

Shaw Air Force Base is near Sumter, SC. That's in the Midlands (I believe), not the Upstate. It's not very close to this area. You might try the South Carolina forum for more info. Good luck!

Hint: Check out Elgin. Lots of Shaw folks live in that area. Nice, newer housing and it's a pretty safe area. Amenities are a short drive away in the Northeast pasrt of Columbia (Sandhills area).

You might want to check the Columbia forum. Personally, I'd stay away from Sumter.

Take advantage of SC land prices and go for the acreage. Live West or Northwest of Shaw. Elgin isn't a bad idea. Shaw itself is a good base. Sumter is essentially East of Shaw so you won't need to bother with it.
