I just hope they don't build more of that ugly, modern crap. It's not much better than the depressing East Berlin stuff! Why not do something nice and 1920s-style?

Probably because it's 2011, not 1920??? Unless there's some historical precedent, why not be true to the age that you're in? Seriously?
This development is too big and too ugly for right on that part of Main. It certainly doesn't help the "European feel" that people talk about in that part of Main Street. It kind of destroys that feel in my opinion. And people wanted a bigger building? I think that's dumb. A big, modern, 70's-style slab of concrete, metal and glass is not very welcoming, or pedestrian-friendly. This is Main Street, SC - not Wall Street, New York. Put these kind of developments at least a block off Main and keep the charm of Main intact.
I'm not so sure that's a spire due to it not being on any other rendering along with the DPC application. Notice no spire on top of the building: http://www.greenvillesc.gov/Planning...MainStreet.pdf However, the DPC application does say the building will be 256 feet tall and I could never figure out where they came up with that number. With the spire in the rendering, it looks like the building would be that height. Just for reference, the BofA building is 240 feet tall. I could be wrong on part or all of this though when it comes to the spire, height of the building, etc.
I'm excited that the 9-story building was designed specifically to be very transparent and for most of the human activity within the building to occur on the outer edges. It should inject some new energy into Piazza Bergamo! I'm also anxious to see the City plans for the piazza..
