Or is the Greenville bus service not really adequate for being carless?

To answer your questions - maybe. Depends on where you live and how flexible your life/schedule is.

It will be a while yet, but they ARE working on making our transit system more relevant to a larger number of people. They're looking at more & different sources of funding, and are planning to serve more suburban locations & GSP airport and increase frequencies. There's a long-term plan for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line along old rail right-of-way. Good things are coming, but it'll be a while yet.

to be fair, the streets around here aren't really setup for efficient bus routes, both physically and geographically.

How about for a retired individual? Where would be better areas to live in terms of bus service and proximity to... the park, downtown, the zoo, groceries, the ballpark...all that makes Greenville a great place to live.

If you're near any of the existing bus routes, you'll have direct access to most of these things. Greenlink Route Maps The main transfer point is in the middle of downtown, a decent walk to Falls Park. There's a free downtown shuttle (looks like a trolley) along Main St. between downtown & Fluor Field. There are routes that link downtown with Haywood Mall, and I'm sure at least one decent grocery store is along one or another existing bus route.
