NY to Greenville
Hi I am currently in LI NY and looking for a nice place with great schools, We were looking into FLA but, the HOI and taxes scare me. A lot of people say the schools are horrible in FLA. My criteria is just good schools and a good cost of living. My husband does Cat Scan and MRi, and I am a teachers assistant. combined we should make 70-80,000. In fla they say that we would barely make it, what about Greenville area? I want to get away from the Long Island attitiude, have a simple life, I do not drive the Lexus, I drive a ford! I do once in a while enjoy an iced coffee, but simple with skim milk, not double this or that. In closing are there any New Yorkers that have moved to this area and like it?

Thanks! I am trying to plan a trip soon, my friend lives in Mt. Pleasant, near Charleston and loves the SC way of life she said Greenville is gorgeous! The people on the Fla forum have said the cost of living is so high there and so did my Uncle and father in law so, I think we will be concentrating on SC or NC for now thank you again!

Momix5,
I am originally from LI, have lived in Fla for almost 9 years and want out !!! I have checked out SC & NC and even thought about going back to LI. LI even though I miss it, what you get for the money as far as housing - crazy, and insane taxes. Fla - you will make less than 1/3 of what you make on LI no matter what you do and you will have to erase NY from your resume and be lucky to get a job, housing prices are crashing which will help w/taxes which are based on the sales price but you will be lucky to get insurance and if you do it will be expensive. If you like change of seasons stick to SC & NC. I am making another trip in about two weeks to check it out again. I don't want to make the same mistake twice. I do live in a very nice town in Florida - Port Orange which is about 10 minutes south of Daytona Beach w/two seasons, very clean, good police dept, low crime, family oriented, just not for me! Good luck w/your decision.

Hi Momix5,
No, I don't have kids but I know that the schools in Port Orange are good. If you go to Volusia.org you can check out everything about the county. Yes, the HOI is very high and if you make your deductible too high you will be in big trouble if there is a hurricane and you have any major damage. There is also a tax calculator on the web site so you can figure out taxes. I will be in SC/NC from about August 9th - 18th. To answer the other question I was born in Flushing, moved to Baldwin when I was four, lived in Freeport for a short while, lived in Hauppauge (loved it) but due to divorce moved back to Baldwin. Enough said I was very stressed out because I worked in the city and had a 3+ hour commute and thought Florida was shangrila. It may be to some people but I need change of seasons. The heat wears on you after a while and time just flies by because you have no real sense of time. Good luck with your decision it is a hard one. Remember one thing - there is no place like home !!! I think the Greenville is beautiful, North Carolina is too but scares me a little with so many people flocking there.

Momix5,
Post a message for Skyliner and Rested Traveler - they have lots of info about the Greenville area - actually read the posts and you will see that they have helped many people - and posted many photos.
