Looking at potentially relocated to Landrum - can anyone give us some info on housing?
Hi: We have been looking at homes in Landrum and have found one we liked located off of Dill Road. It has some land to it - would like to know what the housing market is like in this area please? What the community is like? We would be relocating from Southern Maryland which is rural. House is up there in price because it has 23 acres and is a small horse farm. House has been done real nice - also has barn. Home is about 10 years old. Is this area safe? How about the people? My husband is a brick layer, stone mason by trade and has about 30 years of experience in doing specialized construction - homes and commerical - would he be able to find work?

Landrum is very nice. It has a cute little downtown area, and is close to the Cliffs at Glassy Mountain, one of the nicest developments in Greenville County. Lake Lanier is a small lake in the area which has some nice houses on it. Landrum, along with Tryon NC and Saluda NC, forms a charming trio of small towns. A lot of people retire to this area, and the area is known for having quite a few horse farms.
I think the area is very safe. If you like small town life, Landrum is a great choice.

Appreciate your feedback. We like small town atmosphere with access to bigger city conveniences without having to drive over an hour to get there. Do you know anything about the work situation with regards to jobs in bricklaying - construction there?

I LOVE Landrum. If you're looking for small rural town in the mountains (or right at the foot of), you can't beat it.
Two things to think about:
1. It seems to be a tight community that will take some effort to become a part of.
2. I don't think a brick/stone mason would be able to support the family from work in Landrum alone. If he gets lucky enough to get in with contractors at the Cliffs then he will have "local" work. If not, Greenville/ Spartanburg is a 40 minute drive and Hendersonville is about 25.

There is plenty of stone work happening in the cliffs communities. I'm a Landscape Architect and do some work at them. Problem is, its difficult to find a way in to get the work. It seems that a handful of contractors have gotten in good with the developers and they pretty much get all the work. It would be difficult, but not impossible, for a new mason to get his foot in the door. The path I would try first, is to build relationships with the builders and architects that are working there.

Thanks for sharing this connection Tony - hard to get a foot in the door in a new area. My husband is great at his trade - but when in a new area - it takes time to get your reputation established.
