A supermarket serving southwest or south Greer would eliminate food deserts. (Bi-Lo abandoned plans for a store on South Bumcombe Road at Hammett Bridge Road and SC-14. Bloom, on SC-14 near North Batesville Road, in the Pelham-Batesville area, closed in 2010.)

Knight- this area hardly has any of the food deserts you speak of. I have never seen so many grocery options in one place that this area has. I would hardly call the Pelham-Batesville area a food desert. First of all that area around the closed Pelham Bloom seems to be very affluent. I think they can just get in there SUV's and drive a mile up Pelham to Walmart,Bi-LO,Eart Fare and Publix at Thornblade which is what I expect they were doing to begin with or that Bloom/Food Lion would not have never closed.

Pelham-Batesville is an afluent area currently underserved by a supermarket. Bloom/Food Lion filled a void for six years. Though the store succeeded in a good location, it lacked something its competitors miles away had, such as service, products and in-store pharmacies. Customers residing in Pelham Falls and other nearby communities are willing to drive 3 or 4 miles extra toward Pelham Road or Five Forks to satisfy their shopping needs. If any major area supermarket chain would like to invest in the area, more power to that entity.

Isn't Publix on The Parkway a fairly quick drive?
I would agree though, the corner of Pelham / Batesville would be perfect for another grocer.....Fresh Market comes to mind. Is the old Bloom empty?

It was a Food Lion for a short time and then closed down about 9 or 10 months ago.

Perfect spot and size for another Fresh Market.

I don't think there's a Panda Express in Greenville, period. I wish there was. Got them in NC and Ga. Also wish they would put a Popeyes here.

That seems to be a perfect location in need of a full service supermarket, and you would think Publix or Bilo would take over that former Food Lion location. My sister lives in Spaulding Farm off of 14, and that Food Lion was convenient for her, even though overall she prefers Publix.

Bloom was phased into Food Lion in late 2010. The location on SC-14 South closed recently in February.

Would The Fresh Market have better success closer to Greer? It would be a good tenant for Piedmont Marketplace, which includes Tractor Supply Company and Kohl's (opening in 2013), on West Wade Hampton Boulevard.

I think a gourmet format grocery store was considered for the defunct Village at Pelham Marketplace. I do not know if Bi-Lo or Ingle's were courted. With Food Lion vacant, it remains attractive to another grocer.

I don't think Bi-Lo or Publix want that store. Its too close to their Pelham Rd and Woodruff Rd locations.
That location failed as a grocer. I wouldn't expect it to be attractive to another major chain or someone would have snapped it up by now. may sit empty for a long time.
