Not
In
My
Back
Yard

It's supposed to refer to somebody who approves of a concept/idea/plan in general, but opposes have said concept/idea/plan implemented near them ("in their back yard").

Say someone approves of using nuclear energy as a power source in America, but opposes a particular nuclear plant being built near them. Or someone who thinks housing projects are great, just let them be on the other side of town. That would be a NIMBY. They are thought to be possibly hypocritical, or selfish.

The term has been used incorrectly quite a bit on this forum, imo.

"Not In My Back Yard"

I don't want that mall built in my backyard.
I don't want thighway built in my backyard.
Etc.
Etc.

Nimbys are usually myopic and only looking out for their own personal interest.

Thanks y'all! I don't think I have ever seen, or heard of, that term until I came to this forum. I just never could figure out what it meant and was hesitant to ask.

Sometimes (many times, depending on the location) they are most interested in advocacy for the the preservation of historic character that would would lose appeal if dramatically altered. I have seen this fight first-hand in numerous locations.

A recent example of "NIMBYism" was the successful fight to prevent a casino from opening among the sacred national historic sites in Gettysburg, PA.

That name looks familiar. Is she the one against "One"?
