Publix plans Clemson store Anderson Independent Mail

"Publix Super Markets plans a 55,000-square-foot food store with approximately 20,000-square feet of additional shopping area on a parcel of land bordering S.C. 93 and U.S. 123 in Clemson."

They are envisioning bike lines and pedestrian walkways. I'm not sure about the location because of the houses back behind it. They wil add a stoplight to 123 and have an entrance from 123 and Freedom Drive.

Rumors of Publix coming to Clemson surfaces two years ago. This announcement will give Publix 16 locations in the upstate South Carolina, consisting of Anderson, Greenville, Pickens and Spartanburg Counties.

Work has begun on the plaza that will house Publix on Freedom Drive. The project will take less than a year to complete. There will be a turning lane from US 123 onto Freedom Drive into the plaza.

Also, the old Hartwell Inn, formally the Holiday Inn will be completed by May 24th. An auction will be held in June to dispose of the property.

The land is cleared out and the site is much larger than I expected. The old shopping center next door with need a renovation after this is finished.

Also: The 123/College Avenue intersection is coming along nicely. They have added turning lanes and seem to have a slow steady progress. Chipolte, Urban Thread and the rest of the complex looks to be finished or near finished. Keith Street is closed and streetscaping is in full force there. Across from Highpointe, a new student housing complex with houses that hold 4 or 5 people is underway and several houses look to be completed. It's called The Pier: The Pier at Clemson- Student Housing for rent in Clemson SC

Lots going on in town.

Has anybody seen the amount of trees that have been torn down for this development? Nothing short of disgusting. Publix and the City of Clemson should be ashamed of themselves.

I think they should have offered incentives for Publix to renovate the shopping plaza where Monterray's in located. There isn't much land left in the city of Clemson to build. They should annex north of the city all the way to Central. That land is undeveloped and I am sure Central will start annexing it for the tax revenue.

Another development coming to Clemson: Aspen Heights off 93 near Vista Drive. The entrance will be directly across from the entrance to Berkley Place.

Does the city of Clemson not have some sort of planting/tree ordinance for new development, like Greenville city/county? <confused>

Not sure but I am sure they will plant dozens of trees, shrubs and flowers in this new development. The land had previously been home to some rundown apartments and woods. I hope that their next focus is the rundown strip mall with Monterray's in it. It would be cool if Clemson could get a Target... everyone that I talk to would like a small one. Not sure if that would work at the old strip mall though. They could tear it down and build apartments.
