I live in Simpsonville with my family and even though I would never live here as a single, I think it is a decent place to raise a family.
Houses are not too expansive right now, it is a safe place to raise a family, shopping on Fairview Rd. is convinient, we have the city park, Southside park, Heritage park and the YMCA for sports activities within 5-10 minutes. Greenville is a quick ride straight up I385.
Yes, there are a lot of Cookie Cutter neighborhoods, but we have plenty of kids here, it is safe and clean and the kids are happy. That's good enough for me. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying Simpsonville is the place to be but to call it a nightmare is a joke. I guess yo haven't seen nightmare places. And we pay a lot less than $1500 for a very nice place (although we don't rent).
I honestly think, Simpsonville would be a place that the OP is looking for.
Simpsonville is a nightmare. No joke.

I wouldn't call Simpsonville a nightmare but I wouldn't suggest it for the kids. It's a very nice place and my grandmother and uncle are very happy with it...but they're 50 and 75... And as far as schools go... :/ Not impressive. I wouldn't say it'd be bad but I would say far from ideal.

I'm sure there's the neighborhood kids that run around and have fun but growing up in Greenville where I was a bike-ride away from downtown or church or a park...it's all great. People are very friendly. Going downtown at night with the friends is easy and not far. Schools are close together. Traffic isn't even that bad.

There are lots of good areas around Greenville to raise a family. Simpsonville is one of them. For what it is worth, in 2010 Family Circle Magazine rated Simpsonville one of the top 10 towns in the nation to raise a family

And again. I think, some people haven't seen nightmares. I am not gonna try to defend Simpsonville, since I don't want to live here forever but to call it a nightmare? Seems like some spoiled people only lived in perfect Pleasantville.

I am looking at Mauldin, the crime rate in Simpsonville is horrific according to the data. Best of luck.

We are in the process of moving from Indiana and decided on Simpsonville after visiting. Schools are highly rated and close to everything. Our other option was Greer.

As the beast real estate agent in the region (have my shots) the north part of Simpsonville is nicer than the south. I call it the Woodruff Line

Simpsonville is accused of being a "nightmare" because it is 'cookie cutter' and 'urban sprawl'. But for the question of where to raise a family, these concerns are not high priorities. High priority concerns about areas for raising a family are

1) low crime
2) good schools
3) stuff for kids to do
4) lots of other families raising kids
5) proximity to grocery stores and other stores necessary for home life

How cute and original your neighborhood is may be high on the list of "Best places to impress hipsters?" but not "Best place to raise a family?"

I don't know what data you are looking at but I just can't see Simpsonville as a high crime area.
