Charter will do promotions you just have to get to the right person . I just went through this last week. They were charging me 54.99 for 30 meg, Internet only. I called and complained because my bill went up. I threatened to cancelled and they sent me to a "customer care rep". 10 mins later I have a new promotion for 30meg at 39.99 for 12 months. You just have to be persistent and get connected to the people that can actually help you, which is very few for charter. Ask to be transferred to this so called "customer care rep". Good luck
Thanks SCSkier. I tried calling twice yesterday. The second time I called, the guy says "I see you called earlier and spoke to so and so and they offered you this. That is the best rate we have and you are getting a better rate than most". I asked that they transfer me to Retention and they said Retention can't offer me anything more and that all Retention does after this so called restructuring is cancel service. What I don't get is if the person answering the phone now has capabilities to cancel then why even have a Retention dept? ...makes no sense.
I will try 'customer care rep' today and see what happens. I hate having to go thru this each year. I usually end up getting a decent deal but I really have to fight for it.
I wrote on their Facebook page with my complaint and got this response:
We understand your concern with our new rates. Last June we made changes based off customer feedback. We were continuously being told people were frustrated having to call in every 6 or 12 months when the price increased. From this information we decided to restructure our plans by adding more value and benefits for our customers; we enhanced our Internet speeds; and reduced our Standard Rates of services. We still offer new customers, as everyone once was, introductory promotions. Our existing customers are able to take advantage of our new plans and lower prices.
I agree jamiecta. I told them that. I told them they can charge whatever because we have no choice. Sure I could leave Charter for 31 days to get on a promo as a new customer but Charter is the one and only internet service offered in my area so I have no other choice but to stay unless I did without internet for a month.
If they only had some competition, we might get better prices and more promos.

Can you not get AT&T? I have internet alone with them. 33.00 per month for Fast Access DSL. I like them and never have a problem

I'm kind of in the country in Simpsonville so only Charter internet is offered. I wish we had AT&T or other options. I would definitely jump ship.
Evidently Charter is doing away with promotions. The whole point of the new fixed pricing is to get everyone on the same pricing plan and not using promos. So they increase their prices and stop offering promotions. Sounds like this is more in Charter's favor than their customer's favor.
I would suggest that if you call and threaten to cancel, that you be prepared to do so. When my 12 mos rate was ready to expire, I was prepared to start cutting services to compensate. With that said, I was surprised to see my 12 month discounted rate continued automatically without any intervention necessary, for the first time ever. The price is nearly identical and there was only a few weeks prorated at the higher rate. I feel the pain for any longtime customer in good standing, having to fight for reasonable, consistent rates, but I was very happy to see them give me the same rate with no new agreement. Overall, I am still very very pleased with Charter services and support, and hear complaints often from friends who have to deal with awful service from the other cable companies. Switching to Dish or DSL are backup options, but I don't believe I would be satisfied with either, IMHO.

It's the JC Penney model: offer the best possible price to everyone, not just those with time to spare looking for sales and coupons. In Charter's case, they're offering the best prices to everyone, not just those who take the time to call in every 6 months. That also cost them just to staff the customer service to answer the calls, so in effect, they were rewarding the wrong people.
It does cost them, say $600 to acquire each new customer, but it doesn't pay them to operate at a loss to avoid losing customers.

for internet I agree. DSL just isn't as competitive with the fastest cable speeds.
However, for TV, I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied after switching to Dish from Charter. We did so 2 years ago and it was cheaper and better. 2 years later I'd say the same thing - easily better than Charter. Clearer picture and DVR serving multiple rooms all averaging less per month than we were paying for Charter with a worse picture and no DVR. I never plan to use Charter for TV again.
