Italian restaurants
Hi,
I'm new to Greenville and have been craving some good Italian food -- not a chain and preferably not super-expensive, but one of those mom-and-pop, maybe hole-in-the-wall type of places that actually ends up having really great food. Are there any around here? I haven't had much luck so far -- I thought Capri looked decent, but oh boy was that ever bad. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Try Travinia on Woodruff Road. Most likely not the best you'll find, but I used to go there and really enjoyed the food. I'm out of time, but plan to add more when able.
Here is a short list for now.

Portafinos (sp?) I think its just off E. North st. Look it up in the phone book. They have the most amazing salad and garlic rolls and the meals are all perfect, all the time. its in the corner of a small strip mall so people wouldnt normally try it unless refered. Doesnt look like much from the outside but please try it. You wont be dissapointed.

I don't like Capri's either and i'm italian. My grandpa was born in Italy. I LOVE Portafino's. Travinia is also really good. One not mentioned yet is Italian Market and Grill just off Haywood Road behind Kinko's near Barnes and Noble.

Giovanni's on Woodruff Road is excellent. Very small mom and pop-type place only 10-12 tables but the food is excellent.

For a smaller mom-and-pop Italian restaurant, I second the Giovanni's recommendation. I have also heard good things about Portofino's, but have only been there for dessert.

I have been to and loved Portofino's as well. I remember the Augusta Street location (now the location of the excellent "Gourmet Pizza") even more since I have not been to the East North Street location nearly as many times.

Italian Restaurants
I like Portofino's on East North Street near the intersection of Howell Rd (Haywood turns into Howell 1 mile north of Pelham). Which Capri's location did you try?
