Sounds like bobcat to me. I hear them from time to time here in the SWVA mountains. Makes the hair on my neck stand up and I just quickly go inside .

Bobcat - that's what my friend from Louisiana thought, too. We had them in CA but I never heard them before.

We're in Travelers Rest. My neighbor has seen a bear on our property. We had a bobcat sitting in the driveway one morning. Have seen several snakes, rabbit, deer tracks but no deer. At night, we hear coyote in packs of what seem to be 20 or more. They get so loud hunting at night, that we have to close up the windows and put the fan on high to drown them out. Got a turtle just the other day.
Have not seen any sign of coon or possum.
I've lived in FL and LA and the red ants here are not even 10% of the issue they are down there.

I just want to confirm something from an earlier post -
Are there any alligators in the region?
Also - I have heard foxes at night in Colorado- they do make a sound as they hunt - sort of a sneeze/cough/growl/bark sound. I believe they do it to scare up small prey. They don't sound like a woman though. I agree you were probably hearing some kind of cat.

I have never seen or heard of alligators being in the upstate, except at the Greenville Zoo!

Oh, silly, thats a slug. Nothing exotic about that. They even sell slug bait to kill them and some folks bury cans of beer in the garden for them to fall in and drown. [they are attracted by the beer odor]
You step on one barefoot in the middle of the night. That is an icky experience.

we're 30-45 minutes from the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountians, where all forms of wild life are in abundance. The ant situation is not an epidemic - cautious treatment keeps them under control. We did have a sighting of a bear in Simpsonville. And sometimes the wildlife gets a little rowdy, depending on what they're drinking!
