Another visit to the Greenville area and observations...
Let me start off by saying we enjoyed our recent visit to Greenville. Our favorite part is the downtown with all the places to eat, shop and hang out. Every place that we ate, the food was delicious. While we were downtown, people were social with us. Many people we met were from different areas aside from Greenville. For the most part, people we spoke to liked the area. The other area people mentioned and enjoyed was Asheville, NC. ( a short trip from there)
Outside of downtown and at the hotel, people weren't over friendly. They pretty much kept to themselves. I don't know why it was that way? One thing we noticed is that there are alot of smokers there. The good thing in Greenville is that they have to smoke outside.
Although I like downtown Greenville, my husband says it's too congested for him and he couldn't deal with the traffic every day. He liked the downtown but outside that, it was just suburbia to him. He preferred Greer much more.
Greer has a cute downtown with a couple shops, restaurants and bars. I could see it expanding. There was less traffic there. It seemed to have almost everything that you needed only having to go to Greenville on occasion. Lake Robinson was beautiful. My husband preferred that area the most. He liked how it was more country.
Overall, I liked downtown Greenville the most. I like the livelyness with all the events going on and Main St. My DH liked Greer the most. If it were up to he and my son, they would chose Asheville, NC over Greenville. My son because of the young hippy crowd and my DH because of the topography. To me, Asheville was not my type of crowd and kind of expensive. I do enjoy visiting there though and it is pretty. The COL in Greenville is less and there are more jobs in Greenville.
Let the battle begin between Greenville and Asheville! LOL (at least we narrowed it down to a 60 mile radius)

It seems that every post you make has a reference to smoking. I hate to break the news to you but you are in the tabacco belt here. Maybe those people were not freindly because you showed your dislike of them smoking? You seem to like the area, but you can not make everybody stop smoking just because you want to move here. And like my last responce to you I am a non smoker. The reason the place is great is because people can be themselves and not constantly told what they can and cannot do. This country is turning to c**p because of rules and regulations and certain groups wanting their way with no regard to what others are entiled to.Welcome to the new america were it my way or no way!

There are a lot of smokers here because it is one of the last places where it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to do so. That is only 1 of many reasons we choose this area. Greenville and Simpsonville are smoke-free but Mauldin is not and likely never will be. The State doesn't want to do anything about it so it is up to the cities and counties. Are you sure this is where you want to move?
As to your thread about traffic? Why do we need multiple threads on your recent visit? We know there is traffic here. We have more 2-lane roads that need to be 4-lanes, than 4-lane roads that need to be 6-lanes. Our area for the most part is not ready for the growth. I was stuck on Miller @ Woodruff Rd. today for no more than 10 mins. and it was backed up further than I'd ever seen it before all because of traffic on Woodruff. Yes, some drivers are rude...like the drivers blocking the intersection at Miller @ Woodruff today. Others are not. Hopefully you find more that are not rude than those that are. Everybody wants to get where they are going and they will eventually.

We're building out past Travelers Rest, about 15 miles from downtown Greenville. As much as we like Greenville, we prefer rural living, and will probably only visit the downtown area about 6-8 times a year. People around here all seem to be very friendly, so much so that I had to get used to it.
Traffic has increased noticeably in the last 5 years, but nothing like where we are from in FL. I do think that they had better start looking into controlling it somehow as the area booms.
I guess our location is a compromise, with a short drive to the city, and a short drive to the mountains. Meanwhile, we are surrounded by beautiful woods, which I 'need' a lot more in my life right now rather than city amenities. YMMV.

It is very nice in Travelers Rest, a bit rural for me. I like how you can see mountain views from there.

As for smoking, it was an observation that we made. If you want to smoke, that's your choice and I'm not trying to stop it either. It's just nice that they don't allow it in public buildings. Nuff said.
Back onto my post, it was meant to help people interested about the area. I enjoy reading what people think of the area, good or bad. For the most part, I really like the area and prefer not to focus on a few bad things but focus on the good things.

That's good because you will be much happier if you make it work.
To traffic...when you move here you can be subjective and choose an area with easy access to places where traffic is the worst. We did without knowing it and I wouldn't change a thing. Check out short-cuts and study the street map. People complain about traffic in Mauldin but I'm sitting still less often than I would in Chicago.

You most likely wont be able to make it in asheville unless you are in the medical field. I had to move to greenville from asheville. There are NO jobs in asheville and like you have already seen, the COL far outweighs wages. If I could find a job with the same salary I have now I'd move back to Asheville in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately if it was between the two I'd have to say you need to go to greenville only because if you are lucky enough to find a job in asheville, what do you do when you lose that job? Chances are you'd have to move. Its a very depressing and desperate feeling to have to leave your home because you can't make it no matter how hard you try.

We definitely observed that. It costs more to live there. Most of the jobs available are in the service field. (restaurants, hotels, etc) The good thing if you live in Greenville, you are only just over away to visit Asheville. I hope you get back to visit on occasion.
