Fhenderson, you could take out "Greenville" and insert any other growing city and the assesment would be just as accurate. Furthermore, I do believe you are exaggerating to a large degree. You say, "In 2005 we were ranked number 13 on the Census Bureau for the most dangerous cities." The Census Bureau does not rank cities according to crime; that's the FBI, and Morgan Quitno relies on that data to come up with its annual list--and Greenville has, to the best of my knowledge, NEVER ranked that high on the list, as it always scores lower than other SC cities that appear on the list.

A little Google goes a long way...

Quoting FoxCarolina.com (http://www.fox21.com/Global/story.as...nav=menu149_11)

ST. LOUIS (AP)- South Carolina's largest cities didn't fare too well in a list of the most dangerous cities in the United States.

The report by Morgan Quitno Press shows that North Charleston is the most dangerous city in the state. North Charleston ranks 352nd out of 371 cities across the nation in crime.

Columbia was 295th and Charleston was 240th.

The list is based on F-B-I figures released earlier this year.

St. Louis was the most dangerous city on the list at Number 371.

Brick, New Jersey, was the safest city in the United States.

DATELINE: Nov. 1, 2006

Smile greenville is great (mostly)

South Carolina as a whole is no. 1 in the nation for domestic violence and in the top ten for teen pregnancy, teen suicide, and STD's. South Carolina is 50th in the nation overall for education.
Greenville County is in the top 10 in the nation for seasonal allergies.
HOWEVER:
Housing can be inexpensive, there's lots to do and see (and for cheaply, too), people are friendly, and the county of Greenville as well as the state have a proactive plan to improve crime and education. The city of Greenville always has events going on. There are several local schools (Furman, USC-Upstate, Bob Jones, Clemson, North Greenville) that also have a variety of cultural and sporting events happening on a regular basis.
For children, there are a myriad of activities including parks, a small zoo, and multiple opportunities for athletic development (Parks and Recreation has a coaching program to introduce youngsters to various sports with a cost of $25 per sport - my children have really enjoyed this!). Many of the local churches also host children's athletic leagues.
If it weren't for the heat (goes up to an average of 95 F in the summer) and the wetness (we have two seasons - humid and rainy , I would be planning on staying here for the rest of my life.

Default You Actually Believe All That!

There's no way that you could've believed that enormous bunch of lies. I'm betting that the person who described Greenville like that either likes messing with people or doesn't wany anyone moving there. Here are the top 25 most dangerous cities based upon crime as per FBI statistics:

1 St. Louis, MO
2 Detroit, MI
3 Flint, MI
4 Compton, CA
5 Camden, NJ
6 Birmingham, AL
7 Cleveland, OH
8 Oakland, CA
9 Youngstown, OH
10 Gary, IN
11 Richmond, CA
12 Baltimore, MD
13 Memphis, TN
14 Trenton, NJ
15 Richmond, VA
16 Kansas City, MO
17 Atlanta, GA
18 Cincinnati, OH
19 Washington, DC
20 North Charleston, SC
21 Reading, PA
22 Newark, NJ
23 Little Rock, AR
24 San Bernardino, CA
25 Orlando, FL

Here's the top 10 cities with a population of 500,000 or more

1 Detroit, MI
2 Baltimore, MD
3 Memphis, TN
4 Washington, DC
5 Philadelphia, PA
6 Dallas, TX
7 Nashville, TN
8 Charlotte, NC
9 Columbus, OH
10 Houston, TX

Cities with a population of 100,000 to 499,999

4 Cleveland, OH
5 Oakland, CA
6 Gary, IN
7 Richmond, CA
8 Richmond, VA
9 Kansas City, MO
10 Atlanta, GA

Cities with a population of 75,000 to 99,999

1 Compton, CA
2 Camden, NJ
3 Youngstown, OH
4 Trenton, NJ
5 North Charleston, SC
6 Reading, PA
7 West Palm Beach, FL
8 Macon, GA
9 Miami Beach, FL
10 Albany, NY

Do you see Greenville anywhere in there? That person described Greenville like it was Compton or the South Bronx of the 70's! Here's a list of Greenville's actual crime in 2005:

Murder:5
Forcible Rape:32
Robbery:161
Aggravated Assault:458
Burglary:776
Larceny Theft:2710
Vehicle Theft:308

Yep in 2005 Greenville had 5 murders in those 365 days. Do those ACTUAL crime statisitcs reflect what that person wrote? Have you ever visited Greenville? It's Mayberry! Yea they have crime too but so does everywhere but do those FBI crime statistics show a town that's out of control? Sorry but you were had and that person that wrote that stuff claiming that Greenville is like Iraq was full of you know what. North Charleston is crime ridden and their population isn't that much larger to explain 2 to 3 times Greenville's crime:

North Charleston, SC

Murder:11
Forcible Rape:82
Robbery:519
Aggravated Assault:861
Burglary:1365
Larceny Theft:5033
Vehicle Theft:930

It does appear that crime in several SC cities is above, sometimes double, the national average.
and of those 'crimes', most are misdemeanors. And are Larceny/Thefts or property crime. dig in deeper, and 77.4% of them come in the same zip code area of southwest of the city.

2005 Crimes per 100,000 People:

Greer, SC Crime Index - National Average

Murder: 4.8 - 6.9
Forcible Rape: 33.83 - 32.2
Robbery: 164.3 - 195.4
Aggravated Assault: 314.1 - 340.1
Burglary: 584.7 - 814.5
Larceny Theft: 2918.9 - 2734.7
Vehicle Theft: 256.1 - 526.5

Greer for instance is either below the national average or only slightly above it. Not a single catagory is double or even close to being.

It's fun to play w/ statistics. New York City has a rather benign crime index of 275, well below average, with a paltry 539 murders.

Soprano is on a distinguished road
My husband and I are looking to move from the Chicago suburbs to either Asheville, Chapel Hill area or Greenevill, SC. We live in a warm, inviting neighborhood, but oft times when I am out, people who do not know me throw me those bigoted glares (especially since 9/11) that tell me they think I belong in the Super Mercado, because I have olive skin and dark hair. I know there are many ignorant people out there, but still, it breaks my heart each time it happens. Can anyone give us the truth about Greenville...is it as bad as FHenderson post above? Do people who look like ethnic minorities have a harder time in Greenville?
