believe what you want
and NYBorn, that really isn't the case with my wife, she wasn't lured here with a higher paying salary than her southern co-workers, they all get paid well, its an issue of supply and demand, her field is in high demand, and will be for some time to come

She is blessed.....just like I was blessed that I was allowed to keep the same NYC salary. The point is that the higher paying job opportunities are not the normal routine in the south. Those opportunities are few and far between. There are not diverse job opportunities here......most of the jobs involve labor, manufacturing or the medical field. Those that are in those fields will more then likely do okay here in Greenville. Those that are not in those fields and relocate here expecting to find high salarys and diverse job opportunities will soon learn that they are living in a low wage city. Maybe in 10 years or so things will diversify in Greenville. For now Greenville is a city that is very dependent on a few industries.
New York City
Advertising
Marketing
Fashion Design
Art
Music
Finance
Banking (Wall Street)
Accounting (Ernst & Young, KPMG etc.)
Law
Film (Actors/Actresses)
Consumer Products (Colgate Palmolive Co., Unilever)
Retail
Government (United Nations, FBI etc.)
Greenville, SC
Manufacturing
Medical
Retail
Labor related to the above fields.
See my point. All of those industries exist in NYC, there are diverse job opportunities there. Therefore if someone finds themselves without a job........there is another big fortune 500 company down the street that has job openings. This is the reason so many people want to live in NYC (last time I checked over 20 million people live there).......with new people moving there everyday, that city is busting at the seams because it offers diversity.......you can be anything you choose to be in NYC. But people relocate here things are great at first.........they don't expect to be laid off from a job.......then wham they are laid off and living in Greenville which is a world ruled by blue collar low wage jobs. The low wage jobs far out number the high paying jobs in Greenville by 3 to 1.
As I have said many times people do not have to believe me or anything they read on this forum.........all they have to do is stop any of the locals on the street in Greenville and ask them what type of work they do and how much they are paid!

Compare it to other cities the same size, and you will see it is far better (safer) crime wise, air quality is good, and in their schools seem to be good (altho I'd say all schools should do a far better job, especialy on our Nations history. I think every little thing that happens is put on the local news, but the upstate area is a good place to live. I did offer the make the dreams of a new englander tree hugging freak come true recently tho. He wanted to know if I did an enviromenttal impact study before we cleared the way for building to be built. I offered to make him one with the earth by filling the hole he fell in with dirt (the hole was already being filled anyway!). He acted offended, but since he had just stated we needed to "one with the earth", well, I figured I'd help him make his dream come true.

NYC: Population 8,274,527
Greenville SC: Population 58,754
Gee do you think there might be less job opportunity and less industry here? maybe so!
P.S. I completely agree, I tell everyone on here to look into Greenville and visit before they make the jump, as I would recommend for any city you are moving to!

NewYorkBorn, you pride yourself on being "honest" about Greenville, yet your posts about New York are incredibly misleading. You paint a picture of New York City being almost exclusively white collar jobs, with all these executive positions and frequent job openings. You are forgetting about the many people who move to New York and cannot find a job, or who lose their job in New York and have trouble finding a new one. There are many people there living way beyond their means, because their salary (which might be more than it was elsewhere, but not necessarily) is not nearly enough to justify the ridiculously high rents required to live in the city. That is why you have many people who spend 1-2 hours in traffic each way every day commuting to and from work. And many of them are still paying an outrageous price for their home, with far less house than they would get elsewhere.
For every white collar executive-type job in Manhattan, you also have plenty of service-oriented jobs such as waiter/waitress, hotel clerk, tour guide, etc., as well as clerical positions like secretaries. These individuals are frequently working hourly wage type jobs with no upward mobility.
The fact that you portray NYC as a city exclusively full of high-paid executives shows just how little you know about your supposed former home.

You neglected to include one of the most significant industries in Greenville, Engineering. I can list many other prominent fields in the Upstate, such as,
Advertising
Banking
Business Services
Education
Government
Commercial and Military Aircraft Maintenance
Law
Research
Hospitality
Construction
and much more. I also have dozens of friends who can easily prove that you are able to be an artist or musician and live comfortably in Greenville.
