There are many people there living way beyond their means, because their salary (which might be more than it was elsewhere, but not necessarily) is not nearly enough to justify the ridiculously high rents required to live in the city. That is why you have many people who spend 1-2 hours in traffic each way every day commuting to and from work. And many of them are still paying an outrageous price for their home, with far less house than they would get elsewhere.
For every white collar executive-type job in Manhattan, you also have plenty of service-oriented jobs such as waiter/waitress, hotel clerk, tour guide, etc., as well as clerical positions like secretaries. These individuals are frequently working hourly wage type jobs with no upward mobility.
The fact that you portray NYC as a city exclusively full of high-paid executives shows just how little you know about your supposed former home.

As for secretaries in NYC, glad you mentioned that..........have several friends (some working for the same company in NYC that I came from) in NYC who are secretaries at some of NYC best fortune 500 companies.........they make $60 - $80k a year without the headaches of management! Unlike these so called secretary positions here where the secretaries are lucky if they are paid $30k a year.
If Greenville is so perfect then why are you currently living in Charleston
Then again.........I could care less..........my posts are directed at the person asking for advice about relocating to Greenville.........so from now on you and these other cheerleaders will be IGNORED whenever you try to address me!
South Carolina and specifically Greenville are famous for having a lot of LOW WAGE paying jobs.......fact not fiction!

Are you still fighting with people about the wages in Greenville? I thought this was settled. People moving here can check out Monster and Careerbuilder and figure out what their respective field is paying and if there are any jobs that match their qualifications.
To say that Greenville does not have a large amount of white collar jobs is as ignorant as saying that there are no service jobs in NYC.
I can't understand why you keep interjecting, on every thread, that there is nothing but low paying blue collar manufacturing jobs in Greenville. One look at the companies with offices in the area proves you wrong.
Just because you were not successful in landing a new dream job after you were let go from your previous position, does not mean that the next person in line didn't get it.

Why are you ignoring someone who is trying to teach you something you clearly did not know? You pride yourself on providing "accurate" information about Greenville, yet you seemingly have no desire to learn more about it yourself. Ironic, yes?

We can all throw out anecdotes until our heads spin. Let's look at statistics.
Greenville, South Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Quote:
|
The median income for a household in the city was $33,144,
|
Life or Something Like It On City’s Median Income | The New York Observer
Quote:
|
In 2007, the median household income in New York City was $48,631
|
Now, let's look at bestplaces.net's Cost of Living Comparison:
Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed
Quote:
|
A salary of $33,144 in Greenville, South Carolina should increase to $67,414 in New York, New York
|
Quote:
New York is 103% more expensive than Greenville.
Housing is the biggest factor in the cost of living difference.
Housing is 284% more expensive in New York.
|
So the cost of living is 103% more in New York, NY, than in Greenville, SC.
But the median household income in New York, NY is only 46% higher.
So if a median-income worker moved from Greenville, SC to New York, NY, his costs would double but his income would increase less than half as much as his expenses increased. His standard of living would have to decrease.

Thanks
Thank you for putting this issue to rest!
I don't trust Wiki for info, So I did some further checking. CNNmoney.com is showing the G'ville median family income at $53,482.00.
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/money...PL4530850.html
I thought that was pretty interesting and offered even more support to your study.

This is about non-existent job diversity in Greenville and the state of South Carolina as a whole and the fact that Greenville is heavily dependent on a few limited fields.
You are right though, we can argue back and forth about this all day long the fact still remains that South Carolina and the city of Greenville are behind in creating job diversity and a decent wage for the masses to live on. When I say a decent wage for the masses.........I mean better paying jobs for everyone not just an elite few who happen to hold one of the limited management jobs in this city! Anyone that tries to pretend that South Carolina is a place where people come looking for diversity and good pay is dillusional! The promise of lower cost of living is a big part of what is driving the increase in the population here. People are running from as you mentioned cities like NYC that are a 100 times more expensive and looking for alternatives.
