What about Greer??
Hi folks we are still looking around. Wondering if Greer would be a good choice for us. What do you think? Still looking for something with a nice, easy commute to General Electric on Garlington Road, kind of out of the way and private. Is I85 from there into Greenville something to be avoided? A few homes have caught our attention there, and now we need the advice of the people who know...As always, thanks!

Traffic on I-85 between S.C. 14 and I-385 is definitely heavy during both rush hours, but you can take Garlington Road from Pelham Road as an alternative during those times. The Greer area has been experiencing a large swell of growth for the past decade, so there are obviously lots of newer neighborhoods around the GSP International Airport and even more south of I-85 in the Pelham-Batesville area. This area is overall a very nice part of town with good neighborhoods and nearby shopping and dining. Two beautiful new hospitals are under construction near I-85 in the Greer area. Look for that entire area to explode over the next couple of decades (if not sooner).

What about Greer
More on Greer....Is it a noisy area due to being near an airport? Is it considered to be a busy airport? We have an airport on the other side of Erie and the noise over there is sometimes too much. Also, someone mentioned morning fog to us. Is this true in the Greenville area? Are some areas prone to more fog than others, if this is a concern? as always-thanks

It can be noisy, but it is definitely not a busy airport. The only time it gets noisy is when those big military jets fly in. I have never had a problem with fog here. The mountains can be a different story though.

The neighborhoods around the runway definitely receive plenty of noise from the jets flying in and out of the airport. One of my friends who lives there says she actually likes the jet sounds throughout the day and night. Greer is large enough that the airport doesn't affect most of the land in its city limits. There seems to be a variety of options for living, from condos to townhomes to country estates.

I've lived in Greer my whole life and the jets/planes never bothered me.
Sometimes at night when it's quiet one will fly in really low and it will be really loud, but it happens infrequently.
Our old house was under one of the landing patterns, so that planes coming in for a landing would circle over before they landed. Noise was never an issue.
Now i'm closer to one of the smaller downtown airports and I notice more noise from the small planes than I ever did from the jets.
You'll get used to seeing planes coming and going at all hours when you live in Greer.
I still think it's awesome when you're near wal-mart or driving down 14/101 or 80 and they come in for a landing and swoop right down over you.

Certainly, there are lots of back ways to get to GE on Garlington. It's my favorite cut through to get to the shops on Woodruff without actually going on Woodruff. As for I85, unless there is an accident it's really not that big a deal for that short a distance but as I said you don't even need to get on it with all the roads that can get you there.
