Plans are afoot for a bona fide observation tower along with trails, restrooms, etc at SC's highest point, Sassafras Mountain. It's about time!

Sassafras already has a good trail in case anyone is interested. I love the idea of creating an observation deck on the pinnacle. It will be the highest man-made structure in the state, standing atop the highest natural structure in the state (3,560 feet). Of course Upstate residents can drive to much taller mountains within a short daytrip, so this height isn't necessarily a major attraction.

I just like that fact that it's in South Carolina, not North Carolina... And it will be something else to be promoted at the GO Center (name?) downtown. GO PALMETTO STATE!!

So it's going to be over 350 feet tall then? Do we have a construction timeline?

The observation deck could be one centimeter tall and it would still be more than 1,500 feet higher than the tallest man-made structures in the state (a pair of TV transmission towers along the coast).

Oh, I thought you were just referring to the observation tower itself being that tall.

I agree that it is a great idea. It is THE highest peak in South Carolina after all.

The article may have stated this and I missed it as I'm on my IPad. Where does funding come from? Part of the GO center funding?

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham will be up for re-election in 2014 and he was all over the WYFF story about this tower, so put the pieces together and take an educated guess as to whether Federal tax dollars will be included.

The summit project will next move into its fundraising phase. Pickens County, the Highpointers Club, Duke Energy, Foothills Trail Conference and the Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund also are serving as partners in the project. All of the partners will work to secure private donations, which are tax deductible.

This is great news to hear. I can't wait to get up there and snap some pictures and take it all in. What a view that will be.
