Water Moccasins or Cottonmouths do NOT live northwest of Columbia. That is a common misunderstanding with people.

I think a lot of people call or used to call the water snakes that you see around the creeks and lakes water moccasins, though they certainly are not the same snake. My hazy memory of the Upstate conjured water moccasin as a childhood memory. Most of the snakes I remember seeing were black snakes and king snakes, but I've absolutely seen copperheads in the area I grew up in.

Still beg to differ. We encountered two in Waxhaw near an old pig farm. North Carolina - Waxhaw is near Charlotte, east of York County SC.

The zone maps say no, but I am in the woods a lot, have seen my share of snakes, and know the difference. Unless there is some other pit viper that is mostly blackish with a white mouth - not that I know of.

We killed one of the two** because it was being very aggressive even though we gave it wide birth-It appeared to be a younger leaner snake - but the pits and the white mouth and fangs were confirmed with a stick.

The other one just coiled, exposed that white mouth, and I stayed out of strike range. It was a fat sucker.

I have seen plenty of black snakes, scarlet king snakes, other water snakes, and plenty plenty of copperheads. Have not seen any rattlesnakes in York county but understand they are more numerous over here..

**don't normally kill snakes but we were working dogs and it was literally chasing someone and a group of other folks were about 10 minutes behind us.

I am moving to Williamston, South Carolina. I am wondering what types of creatures I should be warry of. I have children that are curious and I want to make sure I can inform them about what can harm them. Can you help me out with this. Thanks...

Yes, I have seen a bobcat in Greenville. It's stuffed (taxidermy, not toy)and lying over a branch on the wall in my chiropractor's office.

We heard a bobcat last summer in Easley. We only saw its shadow, but the neighbors confirmed it was a bobcat.

YES! When taking walks through the neighborhood where my aunt lives in Anderson, I saw hundreds of fire ants and their little mounds in peoples front lawns where they border the road.
