Cable, DSL, and Cell Phone Companies in G-Ville?
Hi, I will be relocating to Greenville next month from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I am too too excited and am looking into what cable (T.V.), DSL (internet), and Cell Phone companies to switch to. Currently, I have T-Mobile for my cell phone but the reception was HORRIBLE when I was out there, it is through Sun-Com. Also, I have looked into Charter Cable for the tv and internet but heard it was very bad, anybody else have any takes on this company? In addition, I heard DIRECTV was pretty good but I want to get a bundle package so that my DSL & Cable comes out cheaper. I have looked into AT&T/Bellsouth for a bundle package but I'm kind of sketchy about them.
Please give me some input as to the pros and cons about the major cable/satellite, dsl, and cell phone companies in the Greenville area.
Thank you in advance!

I have Bellsouth/AT&T for phone and internet and like them. They also bundle DirectTV. Your only other option is Charter. Pricing is all about the same, however, if you want DirectTV I'd go with BellSouth. You can also bundle cellphone (Cingular/AT&T) for an even better deal which isn't available with Charter.

Hi there... I'm still on T-Mobile and haven't had any issues- but it does show up under SunCom with occasional coverage from Cingular... so can't really say much about mobile phone coverage
As for cable vs Satellite... I recently switched from Charter to Directv upon moving into the new house... and am in Heaven...
The pros for Satellite were the bundling- my DSL and landline were already on Bellsouth and it was cheaper to add Directv than keep Charter...
The con- well, the only one I found was that with Satellite- there's no OnDemand, but if you have TiVo or DVR, it kinda helps- not completely, but oh well...
Also- with Charter- anytime I had an issue and had to call their Customer Service- it would be more headaches than not...
Have yet to call Directv...
Have friends who had Charter for phone and internet and they hated it...
said the phone service would go out intermittedly during storms and internet out anytime the wind blew...
One just switched to BellSouth/AT*T and so far loves it...
Good luck and welcome to G'ville

Charter has a lot of problems, depending on where you live. Their infrastructure cannot support the population influx that has occurred, and outages are common. If you live outside of the city and the suburbs, you have a better chance of improved service. I would just go with satellite though. Especially since Charter's On-Demand service is seriously lacking compared to my old provider (Comcast).

Hi, thanks for your comments Sporty & Frankie! Well I just learned that the house I'll be moving to already as Charter cable set-up and that the land phone line is with Bellsouth AND that Bellsouth does not have DSL in the area I will be moving to (29605 zip). Soooo what to do now? I suppose I should investigate the price differentials between Bellsouth's affiliate DirecTV and Charter Cable but FOR SURE I will have to purchase Charter for DSL. Anyone have anymore takes on my situation?

Are you sure with Bellsouth on DSL? Did you call and verify or rely on an internet search or on the previous owners comments? If they really don't have DSL in your area then you're out of luck for now. Charter will be the only option. Bellsouth will give you a discount for phone and DirectTV but overall you might get a better deal with Charter for the total package.

Charter has a bundle for phone, internet and TV but you get socked with high costs when your promo ends. If you really want a landline phone I would keep it truly landline with AT&T and then bundle your TV and internet through Charter. I can't get DSL where I am either but there are areas where it is available. If you are changing cell carrier check into Alltel. There is another thread here about cell providers you should check out.

I have to "second that emotion" about Charter vs. AT&T. I have never been a great fan of AT&T, but the Internet is wonderful after switching from months of spotty and frustrating service through Charter. I have the home phone service, DSL, and Direct TV. Love the satellite TV.

Another vote for Direct TV
Here is another vote for Bell South/Direct TV. We almost sued Charter Cable over their practices for our installation here in SC...long story, but we went back to the package we had in Asheville--telephone, DSL, and satellite tv package with Bell South. We love Direct TV and have had Dish in the past. No comparison, Direct wins hands down. Now they have a new HDTV satellite where 150 channels will be broadcast in HDTV. Their customer service is as awesome as their product.
You can also get cellular service through Cingular/ATT if you like. I had that before I married and we did afterwards, but we kept dropping calls (our unique situation as to where we call from) so we switched to Verizon and love them! No dropped calls and we are very happy.
Also remember if you go with the total package from Charter and get VOIP telephone, when the power goes out, so does your phone service. Also their customer service stinks and we lost our cable a LOT when we lived in Asheville.

Another plus with BellSouth/AT&T- you should get a pretty sweet rebate and/or gift cards for signing up on line...
haven't seen any hidden fees yet or the HORRENDOUS customer service that was mentioned above with Charter
So- check AT&T out and see what kind of deal you may get...
Good luck
