Despite some opposition, it looks like they are actually going to start on this within the year!

It's really bad that they couldn't keep the railroad going. It's been around for so long and it would have been nice to attract more industry to the local area instead of letting the big railroads get it. Now you still have the "Pickens Railroad," but it's entirely in Anderson now.

Bike paths are fine, but it's not going to pay a lot of taxes. Meanwhile, a brief history on the rail line that is now being yanked up

I live less than a mile from the Phase 1 area. I am looking forward to it.

Not sure why the negative post, they are doing something with an abandoned rail line, it would have been abandoned either way?? It will potentially bring more people and businesses to the area, which equals $$. As the Easley article says, it has worked for more than a few other cities.

To be clear - this is actually two separate projects.

One is a rails to trails project to connect Pickens and Easley with a bike / walking path over an abandoned rail line.

The second project is a greenway along Brushy Creek that might eventually connect from Easley High School into downtown Easley.

In the end, the two might connect into a longer path but that would be far into the future.

A railroad if run the right way would attract industry. I know the Pickens used to have it, but it dried up and apparently no one thought to replace it. The same thing happened on the Hampton & Branchville. The H&B operated for years with one industry, albeit a large one, an SCE&G power plant. When they stopped taking coal, that eft the railroad without any industry.

The Lancaster and Chester could have gone the same way as the Pickens. For years they were owned by the Springs family who also owned the textile company. They foresaw where textiles were going in the 70s and 80s and began actively recruiting other industry to come in and build on their line. When the last Springs plant shut down in 2007, the railroad would have as well if not for this.

The Pickens could have done this as well and could have used help from local leaders. Instead, now you have a bike path.

they have actually already started the brushy creek trail at the jb red complex. kinda bugs me that they are building it through the middle of the disc golf course. Looks like the disc golf course will have to move to another park i guess....
