My grandmother lives in an old mill house down in Clinton.. We've noticed that she's getting some mold problems.. More accurately, I think, mildew (though both are fungii, it's not the dreaded 'black mold') is the problem, because she has one of the old gas heaters in the living room and keeps the bedroom doors closed all the time.. So, it gets really cold in the bedrooms, really hot in the living room.. And you basically wind up with condensation, which in turn, leads to mildew.
Does anyone have any experience with companies that clean up from mold/mildew? I was thinking of something along the lines of ServiceMaster, which is a fire/flood cleanup company.. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience or knowledge of any other companies along those lines in the area. Or knows of a company that is well suited for a situation like the above?
thanks. We decided to handle it ourselves after speaking with several companies and evaluating the root of the problem.. Basically, she had guttering that was dumping water right onto a corner of the house.. So, repair/replacement and rerouting of the drainspoints of the gutters and some fill dirt solved the problem of the root cause of the moisture.. Then it was (and is) just a massive cleanup effort..
Multiple gallons of bleach to kill/remove the existing mold.. A mold blocking/cleanup/shielding product to 'seal' it.. Followed by a couple of layers of primer with an anti-microbial additive.. Topped off with an anti-microbial paint.. All followed up with the installation of a gas heater in her bedroom so that it will stay warmer and help control the humidity in those back rooms.. And.. Sooner or later, replacement of the windows in the bedrooms.
The problem with hiring someone for mold/mildew cleanup is that they're bound by DHEC regulations, which means that they have to do all the followup testing.. Basically it would have exceeded the value of the house to have a professional cleanup of it done.
