The only tax I would prefer not having to pay is income tax. Otherwise, I have absolutely no problems with paying taxes. It is an important part of our government, even though I would like to see them use it more wisely.

Sales tax and property tax are two different things. $83 a month is going to put you in the poor house?

You would die if you lived where I do now. $6000 a year home taxes on a 1900sf ranch home worth about 275K, $1500.00 a year for two modest vehicles, and a whoooooole other slew of taxation you can't begin to fathom. So cry me a river and pay your freakin car taxes. It's the law.

Should we assume you are driving a BMW based on your screenname? You poor thing...

Skyliner: I hear what you are saying and agree...My prayer is that SC and Greenville do NOT turn into what we have in the NE regarding government waste and taxation. Lord knows if/when I end up in Gville, I'll remember where I came from and vote accordingly and not look to the government to solve every problem in life from a hangnail on up.

The key thing to keep in mind regarding government waste here is that our City thankfully knows how to spend our money wisely, wheras our State is far less trustworthy. I am willing to spend my money in the City because I know it will benefit the whole community due to our great local leadership.

The only tax issue I have about SC is the food tax. Food is a necessity in life and I feel it's unfair to those who are struggling to make ends meet. It doesn't seem morally correct to tax something you need to survive. A few bucks may not be a lot to some, but to many it is.
I had to look at the date you posted. Food is no longer taxed as of Nov1. Only food that is prepared as if it could be take out (sandwiches etc.).

Last state was TN..No personal property tax on vehicles. No state income tax. 9.5% sales except on high end items then you get a break.... TN rates
2004 F-250 tags 75.00 SC 600.00 tax plus tag
2004 Fiver tags 35.00 SC 200.00 tax plus tags
2004 Motorcycle Tags 35.00 SC 200.00 tax plus tags
2006 Mini Cooper S Tags 35.00 SC 600.00 tax plus tags
1951 Motorcycle Antique tag 10.00 SC 600.00 tax plus tag

Bought a F-450 this year $1300.00 tax plus 300.00 commercial tax...Had to get commercial tag because of weight even though it is not for commercial use...
The part that really su@ks is that this is every year..... Think this state needs a Radio Talk show that attacks the politicians like TN had to keep the taxes low...
I support a higher sales tax and kill income tax....It is fair for all then..More you make the more you spend...fact of life....Keep personal property tax on homes and land but drop it on cars.......This state keeps unsafe cars on the road. Some people could afford the car payments but can not afford the payments and the taxes.....
Heck the insurance rates went up over 800.00 per year by moving here on our vehicles...House taxes are about the same...
I'm amazed that the citizens have not revolted about how they are treated....I recently found out about a new major Corporation coming into the area and they do not have to pay taxes for 10 years...Well they say it will help the economy.. Sure it will and the citizens will have to pick up the tax bill.

The personal property taxes are as he said, terrible, terrible, terrible. We have a fifth wheel, a truck and a car, none of them new and the property tax kills us each year.

What business did you hear was coming here to SC.

"Food is no longer taxed as of Nov1"

Is that for the upcoming Nov 1 ?

I just went to the grocery store yesterday and the food was taxed.

Yes, indeed there is no *state* tax on unprepared food as on Nov. 1 2007 No state sales and use tax on unprepared food Read the 2nd to last paragraph which confused the hell out of me when I search the SC website. Basically what they seem to be saying is that any item that can be purchased with food stamps is tax exempt for anyone regardless of whether you use food stamps or not.

Now, if you live in an area that charges an additional 1 or 2% sales tax you do pay it on unprepared food. I live in Greenville County where there is no additional sales tax.

Here is another article TheTandD.com | State sales tax removed from groceries today that is a little (and I mean just a little) more clear.

Would you please answer two questions for me?

1. How does state income tax work? Do you pay 7% on your gross earnings or do you pay 7% on the same amount that you pay federal income tax on. (the amount after your deductions)

2. Does the state tax income if someone receives it from property in another state? I'm referring to rent received on out of state property?

Your SC return starts with the Federal Taxable Income from your federal Form 1040, Line 43, ; 1040A, line 27; or 1040EZ, line 6.

I don't know about property in another state though I am asked that question when preparing my SC return online. Go to sctax.org for info from our DOR.
