Wow they had 227 stores including Alabama and Tennessee 10 years ago when that article was written. Now they are down to around 150 in SC,NC and a few in Georgia according to Wiki.
I do not know what BI-LO's current store count is with its present footprint in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. (Wikipedia claims 164 stores.) The number has declined from stores being divested (Publix, Food City), closing, or being converted to Harvey's Supermarket. The number of stores could continue to decline if more stores close, are sold, or convert to other Southeastern Grocers banners.
BI-LO #5704, Verdae Village, 101 Verdae Boulevard, Suite 1200, Greenville, South Carolina 29607-3823
BI-LO #5704 has been in the process of closing for at least a year. Its hours of operation were reduced. It has closed food and pharmacy departments. Associates have transferred to other stores. The store has been in operation for ten years.
If BI-LO was keeping stores open, those stores would be making sales, not reduce hours, keep service departments open, and retain and increase workforce.
Harris Teeter is finally taking action on both Greenville stores. I am hearing speculation it may return to the Columbia area.

I don't see the Bi-Lo at Verdae closing due to it being the only grocery store in that area.
The new Harris Teeter in the South End area of Charlotte is amazing by the way. Hopefully ours are that nice.
That South End area of Charlotte has a very nice Publix, as well as that new Harris Teeter which I have also heard is very, very nice. But I have not visited since it opened, but the planned HT stores in Greenville are supposed to be very nice also so I will be glad when they finally open next year following some delays.
I've said it before a while ago- I really don't understand the appeal of Harris Teeter. That was our go to place in Raleigh because it was very close, and of course the store was very nice and customer service was as well. However, after living here a while and shopping mainly at Publix, when we returned to Raleigh for a visit I was shocked at the prices; even with a BOGO many items were much higher. Now I shop mainly at Farmer's Markets,. Aldi and Deal Mart. My husband is the grocery store shopper, and the list I give him for his weekly Wed. trip has gotten smaller and smaller. Paper products and things like that he gets at Costco.
