The one thing that GSP does not have, no matter how cheap, is a large number of direct flights. Most of the people that I know using CLT from the upstate look at the advantage of a direct flight and how much more it costs in terms of time and money. A flight would have to be materially cheaper for me to not fly direct.

Unfortunately for GSP (and for CAE.....for you Gville), being so close to Charlotte will always hinder growth at these airports. CLT is growing and will soon add the 4th parallel runway (5th overall). This will allow more air traffic which will take passengers out of the GSP market.

I will take the 25 minute flight vs the 2+ hour drive and park anytime. Then I'm on my direct to SAN. When you add time, gas, and the higher parking fees it's pretty much a wash.

We need the median price, not the mean to be truly indicative of our experiences. A $200 Southwest round-trip to Baltimore and a $900 trip on United to Newark averages to $550. Give me the median price (the one in the middle of all flights) and I can guarantee you will see higher prices out of GSP than the other airports.

I wish GSP would have lower fares than ATL for my flights to California - have never seen it. I do love flying out of GSP, though! Our dilemma, we are 45 minutes from GSP and 2 1/4 hours from ATL. More flight choices from ATL, cheaper, and if we time it right, no Atlanta traffic. I can take a later flight out of CA and drive directly home from ATL instead of waiting 3 hours for the GSP flight.

I am scared to use Allegiant for a Florida trip - really have heard a lot of bad comments. Would love to try it someday.

Well I'll be! I just checked a random date and the cheapest flights to EWR were only five bucks more through GSP than through CLT. It used to be $100+ more per person, which, when you have 2-3 people in your family, made it a no-brainer to use CLT. This is great news.

Just for curiosity I checked our next trip to San Diego the end of June. GSP/SAN Delta 581.00, ATL/SAN Delta 493.00. My truck gets 12 mpg r/t Eastside to ATL 308 miles @ 3.49 87.25. Without figuring higher parking fees, etc. savings of 25 cents. Use GSP and relax.

Flights to Denver are currently WAY more out of GSP than out of Charlotte. About $300 per person for the times and dates we want.

If we are more flexible (and miss an event in Denver on the day of our flight) that difference drops to about $175 more per person to fly out of GSP rather than Charlotte.

And none of the flights out of GSP are non-stop.

This is the deciding factor for us most of the time.

Our last trip was basically the same price to fly out of ATL (to TPA), but hours shorter as the GSP flights went through Houston vs. direct from ATL.
