Since I am personally tired of threads regarding fast food joints, I thought I would start one with great local family run places. One I discovered recently is Samantha's Mexican Restaurant at 2518 E North, near Pelham. Some may call it a "hole in the wall", but to me, it's an authentic family run restaurant that you would see in the Southwest. Great burritos, tacos, tortas and daily specials. I have not had their breakfast yet, but they are only $5. Open daily 9 to 9.

Please share any other local finds!

Mekong Restaurant is awesome. They grow their own herbs when possible. I recommend the duck buns, papaya salad, the crispy rice flour cake...

Lifeit Cafe is a relatively new discovery for insanely healthy and tasty food and smoothies. There is no sign for this place, so it's a bit hard to find.

And Royal Thai is great for takeout. It's always deserted inside, maybe cause they don't sell alcohol? Just a warning, they mean it when they say "spicy."

I really like Mekong and Lifeit as well. I have not tried Royal Thai, but I'm a fan of spicy Thai, so I'm looking forward to it.

One family owned restaurant we tried which wasn't bad was Lil Rebels in Taylors. The portions were generous and the food was good. Nothing fancy but a good country cooked meal.

We like Pizza City for pizza.

The post title is deceiving, but here is a similar recent thread that has some ideas: Moving to Greenville in June!

Some cool family-run restaurants in Travelers Rest: Cafe at Williams Hardware and the Whistle Stop at the American Cafe.

Not in Greenville but well worth the trip to Pelzer: Grits and Groceries. And I also am fond of the Cafe at Williams Hardware; I made a point of taking my sister-in-law there when she visited a while back.

Another place that some people might not think of as a family-run business but indeed is locally owned and managed: Tropical Chicken Grill, AKA Tropical Grill. Owner-chef Lazaro Montoto is about to open his third location out on Woodruff Rd. I really like the mustard curry sauce, whatever it's called.

Family owned:

Korean BBQ (Greenville)

In Spartanburg:
Deli Corner
Renatos
Cuzinas

(I really don't like restaurant chains)

Korean BBQ - are you talking about the place behind Red Robin or the newer Korean Restaurant further down Woodruff? The one behind Red Robin has pretty authentic Korean Fare, particularly for Greenville. Love the Tweji Bulgogi (Spicy Pork BBQ) and all the different Banchan (side dishes) they have there. They are a bit on the pricey side but the food is really good.

I've been meaning to try the one further down Woodruff but as much as I love Korean food, I hate Woodruff Road traffic. Would love to hear some reviews on the newer Korean place.
