Most of the groups are set up according to interest but if you read the bios on most of the members, most of them are relative newcomers. The problem with creating and managing (and paying the fees for) a newcomer's meetup group comes down to deciding what meets the criteria of a newcomer and what do you do when people pass that point of their residency? Kick them out? For that reason, it's easier maintaining participation if there are common interests other than just being new to town. I would suggest trying different activities with different meetup groups.
I agree with GVLGAL, keep checking meetup.com. You'll find a group for you, BUT..if you don't, do what I did, become an organizer and create a group that you think others would like to join!!!
Thanks for the input. There is one group on meetup.com that maybe of interest. It's for all ages to get together to do fun things. There isn't much going on now but I'm sure once it warms up, there will be more activities. I did think of starting my own group as well but I'm not sure I'd have the time to put into it.
Just curious Eldemila what type of group did you start?
Check out "A Bunch of women in upstate sc" on meetup. I joined the group already even though I don't actually arrive in sc till the 29 th. Looks like it's a Mix of newcomers and not Mix of ages and activities. Also it seems like a pretty active group.

I was a member of this when I first moved here, and it's definitely worthwhile.
Not sure how old you are, but there are also some senior groups that have a lot of activities.
Thanks PhotoGal. While technically I fit in that age group, I am not ready for most of those "senior type" activities. Maybe it's because I'm not quite an empty nester yet, but the only senior activity I am interested in right now is the discount at Bi-Lo!
