Are you sure the starting salary is $27,000.00 for a Sheriff Deputy? That seems very low. Where did you get that information?

The pay was never the problem, when I started in EMS 20 years ago we were happy to get $8/hr.. The biggest issue is the lack of respect in general for these jobs has diminished over the years. The public used to love seeing any emergency worker, used to wave to us, move over for the siren without cussing us out, and even stop by and visit a station. Now we kinda stand dumbfounded when someone does stop by to say Hi! (except for other emergency workers).

Does the pay suck in a lot of places to start in Emergency Services? Without a doubt! But the only way to improve it is to raise taxes or have a good Grant writer. And as everyone knows, good luck raising taxes. Plus the fact that cities are charging for ambulances and some fire & police services the public opinion of Emergency Services will only continue to decline causing more people to leave the profession.

The people who we trust with our very lives as well as those who teach our children are treated like dirt while those who sit in the houses of congress and take huge sums of corporate money are treated like royalty with salaries about 6 times this. Does not seem quite fair.

The $27,000 figure was from 2014 when this thread was started. I do not know what the present starting salary is for a Spartanburg County Deputy Sheriff.

The RCMP ( the national Police service in Canada ) 2015 salary rates.

Recruit. After completing the six month training course at the RCMP college in Regina. $50,600.

After 5 years of service . $80.500.

Corporal. base RATE. $86,300 5 years in rank. $ 94, 300.

Sgt. $95,900 to $100, 560.

Staff Sgt ( commands a platoon of 20 officers.) $ 109. 660 to $112,990

Staff Sgt Major , Commands a detachment of 40 to 60 officers $ 115,000.

With 27,000 members the RCMP is the largest Police service in Canada.

I cannot imagine being able to attract suitable recruits with a pay rate of $16/ $20 an hour.

xxx.

Complete apples to oranges comparison. RCMP is a federal agency, more akin to our FBI which has salaries from $50-130k. This is a 300 employee department in a relatively rural part of the country.
