Manufacturing isn't "one" industry. You can call it a market sector but a variety of things are manufactured at companies in Greenville. It isn't legit to say all eggs are in one basket.

It also isn't true the entire Greenville job market has just one sector, manufacturing. Greenville has a lot of engineering design firms. There are medical jobs, business jobs, lawyer jobs, etc.

Detroit's problem was the unions, not the auto industry.
That's a major fallacy. Unions don't destroy jobs, big business and corporate greed destroys jobs. Hell the best paid, least unemployed are the countries with high union membership. Detroit's failing came from multiple causes, poor city management (not due to the party leadership but more to do with picking a leader based on color as opposed to ability to work), destroying its 400 miles of public transit, creating urban ghettos, destroying old neighborhoods for highways, the city's pension system, etc. I'm telling you, what a 'good' job market we have here where you have no negotiation power unless you have a very highly valued skill and no job security.

And yes, Greenville and the surrounding area over-rely upon the manufacturing industry. There is other areas of employment, but something to do with manufacturing is the basis of the economy.
