My mom and I are looking to move to Spartanburg, SC in about a month, however we are not employed nor do we have a place to live. I did a search online about Spartanburg and the assistance they offer, I came across this site that offered help paying bills which listed agencies that help with rent assistance and such. I was blown away at first because I would have never thought that a city would offer something that would help you pay your deposit and/or your first month's rent. With the website up, I proceed to call this agency and I asked, "How do you qualify for the services?", they told me, "We offer no such thing." I am a college student and I am looking to help my mom get established again, but we are going to need some help with housing. Since I am a student, I receive a student refund check, but my mom is not willing to wait until I get this check. It comes in August however she wants to move within the next couple of weeks. SO my question is, does anyone know of a nice house for rent under $700 but offers the first month free or something like that? As far as jobs go, I know Spartanburg has A LOT of temp to hire agencies so that's not the issue.

Not specifically, but I recommend you try Craig's List. Just this afternoon I saw an ad for a 2 BR apartment at Country Club Apartments (Country Club Road, off South Pine Street) for $700/mo with no application fee. The first month wasn't free, but it was just $99. Also, don't overlook Greer, which is nearby and relatively convenient to both Spartanburg and Greenville. Good luck!

I would try apartments first. Apartments typically have lower deposits and specials, there are some around upstate I've seen offering stuff like a 200$ gift card if you sign a lease or whatever. There are some apartments around (not sure about Spartanburg, but I've seen them in Greenville) that do rent on an income based type thing. Look into that too.

But if you can find a house, I recommend trying to get one where the owner is the landlord rather than going through a property management company. It seems like PM companies have more strict income guidelines, that kind of thing.
If you can find a flexible landlord, sometimes they will do something like have you pay the deposit with your rent each month. Like add an extra $100/month to the rent until the deposit is paid.

Look around for a community action agency or something like that - we had one where I'm from in Aiken that would do rental and utility assistance. Also, don't forget that some utility companies require a deposit before they will turn on your service. I've had to do that for water and electric before.
Good luck!
