Hi all,

We are building a new home and would like to have the house pre-wired for a home security system. A number of companies offer to do the pre wiring if you subscribe to their monitoring services for a specified period of time.

Any suggestions on home security companies?

Pay attention to the termination conditions of any contract you might be asked to sign. Those are typically the worst in the industry: consider what happens when you need to move out and the buyer doesn't want to take over the contract.

Simplisafe has a very economical model.

I'm building a home and doing SimplySafe. But of course you don't need to be building to use it. It is simple to install and uses cellular. (You don't have to sign up for their service @ $15 mo.).

Just about everyone in south Fl uses systems. The unfortunate outcome of the past decade. I'd like to know if you could share any crime stats in your surrounding area that you have heard about. I hear often it's on the west side of town. Is crime filtering in to nice areas as well or having a system is just a precaution?

Thank you! Love the downtown and all it has to offer but not familar yet with all the surrounding areas.

There is a link below that can give you more info on crime in Greenville, but I live in the "burbs" so to speak and have not had any issues over ten years. My neighbor had things stolen out of his car (doors unlocked, items on seat), a few neighbors had things taken out of open garage doors, etc... Mostly crimes of opportunity, at least where I live.

The alarms are more of a "insurance policy". In my current home, I had it installed since I traveled a lot and my family was home alone. In my new home I will have a walk-out basement facing the woods, so for the low cost of SimplySafe, I figured I go ahead and install it.

I agree with the above:

I'm most likely going with SimpliSafe (but am considering SmartThings as well).

Hi all,

I called around and decided to go with priority one security. They are a local company and were able to give me straight answers about costs (unlike ADT) and had a sales person who was available to talk (unlike Blue Ridge).

I looked at Simplisafe, but decided to go with a company that would pre wire the house as a means to add value to the property in case we ever choose to sell it.

Check out at&t Digital Life. It requires no wiring, offers full home automation (Indoor/outdoor cameras, auto door locks, water sensor and shutoff, alarm, smart energy, garage door and you can set up macros so things happen automatically), the most expensive package is only $65 a month, no install or activation fees, commitment is only 2 years (unlike the others that many times require 3) and if you ever move they let you leave all the equipment in the original house and give you brand new equipment and install there for free. This can be a huge value, they subsidize the equipment a huge amount. We're talking thousands of dollars and an increase to your homes value.
