The Montgomery Building, located on the northeast corner of North Church Street and East Saint John Street, is a landmark fixture of Spartanburg's downtown and skyline. It was constructed in 1924 as a ten-level office building. Tenants over the years have included the Carolina theater and WYFF-TV's Spartanburg news bureau. The Montgomery Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

I understand the city is forcing the owner to make some repairs to the exterior because parts were falling off. What a shame! That building should have been the Marriott. But I won't get started on a 30 minute diatribe...
I would be curious about any real plans for it as well.
It may have previously been a lovely piece of architecture, but now is another crumbling eyesore in the city and county.
It is a lawsuit and accident waiting to happen, with caution tape, scaffolding and add-ons intended to keep pieces of it from falling on people's heads.
Maybe it could be razed and Spartanburg could open an urban high school or magnet HS in its place, splitting the existing HS into two...crazier things have happened.
The Montgomery Building can be renovated and refurbished. I would like to see someone step forward with a concrete idea to restore it and make good use of it for years to come.
I noticed scaffolding surrounding the ground level of the Montgomery Building along North Church Street and East Saint John Street recently. I do not know if tenant space is being cleared out for reuse, or if the Montgomery Building is proceeding with a complete renovation.
This is a proposal worth cheering about. It could be a win for everyone, including preservationists.
