I regret to be the bearer of sad news. Upstate radio icon Russ Cassell of WORD 106.3 passed away Saturday morning. He was 60.

Cassell has been a fixture in upstate South Carolina radio for decades also working at WFBC-FM 93.7 and Clemson University Tigers football post-game shows in the 1980's.

That's fairly young. What was the cause of his passing?

Heart attack according to the reports I've read. Its very sad and shocking news. I listened to his show whenever I could. I didn't always agree with Russ, but I respected his opinions very much and enjoyed listening to him. He will be missed. Prayers for him and his family.

I agree, very sad and shocking. Am I remembering correctly that his wife is going through cancer treatment or am I confused?

I know that she was, but I'm not sure if she still is or not. Russ was also a cancer survivor.

Vince Coakley is currently seeking election to the United States Congress. He is the Republican Party candidate for North Carolina's 12th congressional district.

If Coakley is elected to office, his Sunday afternoon show would end.

In regards to Cassell's full-time replacement, it is a sudden critical decision WORD 106.3 will have to make. This week, the best of "The Russ Cassell Show" will be airing. As for the weeks afterward, if the programming schedule remains intact, fill-in hosts will be used.
