Rite Aid is rumored to open its new southeastern United States distribution center in Spartanburg County. The new distribution center will be a consolidation of three smaller distribution centers in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Poca, West Virginia
The new distribution center is rumored to go up on Bryant Road north of Interstate 85 on part of a 1,400 acre site owned by Johnson Development Associates through the subsidiary Flatwood Farms LLC. It would be one million square feet and size and create 600 jobs initially.
Rite Aid is rumored to be the company being courted by Spartanburg County in a deal known as "Project Emerald."

I believe Rite Aid mainly entered the southeastern United States when they acquired Eckerd, which had been a familiar name with a loyal following for many years. But now many Rite Aid stores in the south have closed, as they seem to be losing ground to CVS and Walgreens. Locally I see several former Eckerd/Rite Aid stores have been converted to various dollar stores, and Rite Aid seems to have a stronger presence in the mid Atlantic and northeastern regions. But perhaps they are working to reestablish a stronger business model here in the South, as the new distribution center seems to indicate.
Rite Aid was present across the upstate South Carolina region and the southeastern United States through the 1990's. I think it divested its regional stores to Eckerd in 1999 or 2000. Rite Aid acquired Eckerd in 2007. Many low performing Rite Aid stores, including those that were Eckerd, closed in 2009 or 2010.

Incidentally, there is an enormous Walgreens distribution center in Anderson.
CVS took on and still operates Revco's North Augusta distribution center from its acquisition in 1997. South Carolina having distribution center for the three major drugstore chains will be exciting.
I am disappointed that none of these drugstores no longer have a soda fountain restaurant. I used to enjoy a hot dog at Eckerd's.
I knew Eckerd at McAlister Square and Wade Hampton Mall in Greenville had them in the 1980's, maybe up to the early 1990's.
