Does anybody know of a good place to buy steel (square tube, sheet, etc.) for hobby use? Bigbox stores sell it, but only selected sizes and quite expensive.
Where I use to live there was a steel scrap yard that sold by the pound. Some of what they had was new (companies getting rid of left over stock) and could be identified (1020, DOM, etc.). Great prices and a great place to look for stuff for projects.
I had good luck at Ideal Metals, 1213 Hampton Avenue Extension, G'ville SC. 864-235-9939. They have a lot of stuff outside, plus some new material inside. Better prices on new steel than other places I called.
I'm not building anything big now - just a few ****. I seem to have a need fairly regularly for some brackets, or various metal parts to some of the projects I get interested in. I built a Cobra replica some years ago, and liked the chassis design and fabrication.

It sounds like you'll have better luck with Ideal Metals. Metal Supermarkets can probably get it, but they tend to lean toward bar stock for machinist projects than Structural profiles. M.S. is great if you need a several inches of metal, but could get pretty expensive with longer lengths.
You guys are making me eager to get my shop up and running! I'm a toolmaker by trade, but love to tinker at home. I already have a lathe, surface grinder, and welder, and am looking for a mill. Gotta finish building the house first, though.
Would any of the place mentioned sell corten steel sheet? I want to make some corten steel planters.
