House budget of $750K+
Really enjoy reading this forum, makes great reading for prospective transplants such as myself!
For locals: if you had a house budget of $750k ~ $1m, what area in/ around Greenville would you choose to live?
For our personal circumstances, our ideal house would be one fairly close to the city (approx 10 min drive), with a decent sized lot (approx 1 acre) and good schools! Does this exist?! We don't usually care for developments and all the rules & regulations that go with them, but now we have 3 year old twins, maybe it's the way to go with all their amenities. So would be prepared to consider those as well.
Thanks in advance for your replies - we'll be coming to Greenville within the next few months and want to start evaluating Greenville a bit more seriously and so look forward to learning about some new areas, etc.

Personally I wouldn't spend that much on a home regardless of whether or not it's in my budget. That's just me, but yes, there are places in Greenville within 10 mins of downtown that have 1 or more acres in that range. Some are here Journal Homes Report : Search Results : Greenville, SC Real Estate
Personally, my ideal place is at the beach. A small shack would do me just fine.

Personally, I would look at the Augusta road/Alta Vista and North Main areas of Greenville. They are the old, tree-lined neighborhoods with historic houses. They are very close to downtown as well.

The Augusta Road area is definitely a great choice. However, there are also some beautiful newer homes around the Five Forks area of Woodruff Road if you're willing to drive around 20 minutes to reach downtown. It's a nice area to be in because you can get to most places in Greenville County pretty quickly, and there is lots of shopping.
One neighborhood near Five Forks that is very popular is Kilgore Plantation. It's a planned community with home prices starting in the $500s and ranging to around $1 million. The lots are larger, and the elementary school (Oakview Elementary) is one of the best in the county. Since most of the kids at Oakview are from affluent, well-educated homes, academic success is the standard there. Plus, the money raised by their PTA is used to make improvements to the school that are typically only seen in private schools in this area. And, no, I don't live there!
Good luck with your search!!!

Thanks for the feedback.
We were looking to get more of a locals insight into the difference between the neighborhoods, so the info about Kilgore Plantation and its schools is particularly useful, thanks. Looking at a realtors.com or whatever, you can't really get much of an idea about a development and it's amenities, access to downtown, school, popularity, etc. so any more info like that on other developments we should look at would be appreciated.
Will definitely also check out the Augusta road/Alta Vista and North Main areas of Greenville. Do both of these fall under the same zip code 29601?

Most of the North Main area is 29609, I live close by.
Check out the North Main area and Augusta areas as others said. Also look at Montibello and Chanticleer, they're two nice neighborhoods with BIG houses.
You could find a nice condo or space downtown as well, but you wouldn't have the yard.

When we started researching the Gville area we found greatschools.net to be very helpful. I thought their ratings were right on. Once I found some good school districts I used ggaronline.com. It is far more useful than realtor.com. Once you get to know the area better you can narrow your searches around town by code (they divvy up the area into areas like 012, 021, etc.). I also found the search ranges totally helpful, like search by subdivision name (very neat!), school, size of lot, etc. I found out the subdivision names in the search box are static, ie, if the name shows up, there are houses for sale there, if not in the list, then no houses listed in MLS. I used this site so much I practically memorized the houses for sale in the area I wanted! Just be careful on limiting searches by say, schools. Some listings do not have the school information in them and therefore that listing will not show up in your results list. I found it most helpful to limit searches based on Area and Price first and then you can narrow down from there. Also check ggfsbo.com for fsbo's not in MLS. I hope this helps. Good luck!
