Has anyone used this tubing outfit in Saluda, NC? If so can you comment on the tubing conditions, i.e.. how difficult is it? Is it safe for youngsters 8 to 10 years of age? What have you experienced? Thanks.
I haven't tubed up there since they banned drinking; years ago it used to be a pretty rowdy time. The Lake Adger residents got fed up with beer cans floating into the lake, and justifiably so.
The lower green is fine for small children, all the rapids are Class II or less. I would recommend PFDs for anyone without strong swimming skills. Also the water is very cold, but you get used to it quickly.
Haven't ever tubed it but always see lots of tubes when I've kayaked it before. They've cleaned up the drunk redneck scene by issuing tickets to anyone with alcohol. It's pretty family friendly now.
I've been there with my sons when they were 14 and 16 and they loved it. There were many children 6 and 8 yrs old also floating down the river. Life jackets are issued along with the tube and I highly recommend them.
There are a couple of areas that are rocky with rapids, and they require attentiveness, but the other people on the river are also willing to assist. I would recommend bring bungee cords with you, so that you can attach your tubes together (or disengage easily when you want to float apart).
We tubed the whole 6 miles with a 4, 6 and 9 year old kids, and 3 adults. Each adult had a kid tied to them. The rapids are not too big. The only issue we had was we started without the 9 year old tied to an adult and he flipped out. Once we tied him off it was lots of fun. We used Green River Cove. They have tubes of various sizes. Lots of fun!
