I'm looking to start giving back a little as I'm reaching that point in life where helping others is becoming more important to me. As a US Army infantry combat veteran my heart is broken when I hear and see the families, and particularly the children, of the service men and women that never made it home. They are called gold star kids and families.

Does anyone know if there are any charities in the upstate or SC as a whole that support them? I was thinking maybe like a Big Brother/Sister program that's more geared toward them where vet's that understand their pain could help them out with whatever they need.

I'd also like to know about wounded warrior and that sort of program. I'd like to involve my 10 year old son as well because I think he's at that age where it would be good to show him some of the sacrifice that we have to make to live in the country we have.

Funny you should say that, I have been thinking along the same lines but something like helping support families who are serving or have served by paying their power bill over the summer or something like that. I am time strapped most weeks but I can help take care of a few bills for a vet or drive one to the store on Saturday - I am going anyway......or I could pick up some things from the store for them.
I have been thinking about this for awhile, just didn't know where to ask so I am glad you brought this up!
