Could you give me a little advice? My husband and I are thinking about moving to Greenville but have heard so many negative things about Yanks in Greenville. How they can not find jobs, how people are rude, etc.. We LOVE the city, parks, etc. but are concerned about fitting in. We are slightly liberal, non-religious Northerners with a three year old little girl. We are spiritual but not Christian. Need I say more? We like to know what areas would suit us best. And if we should make this move??????

It's not that the people here are rude to New Yorkers it's that New Yorkers have a chip on their shoulders. I'm from Miami and I didn't like New Yorkers down their either. In my experience alot of New Yorkers are rude.

thats a sterotype, like saying all southerners are racist and undereducated, its just not true, while SOME people may fit both of those molds, thankfully not all of us do

I am exactly what you described, slightly liberal, not super religious, friendly. Let me just tell you that many of my friends up north told me we wouldn't be accepted down here, that people would act strange toward us, we wouldn't make friends etc.. So we visited and found EVERYONE to be super friendly, we met tons of people, everyone was so helpful(and nobody moved slow like we were told by folks up north, lol) and we loved the town and moved here two months later. (I know i've said this in other threads, but we just bought a home and plan on staying a long time, we close next week yay!)

Keep in mind i'm sure people have their share of experiences that were not as friendly as mine, I just wanted you to know that mine was not that way, I have never experienced prejudice based on the region I was born in. As a matter of fact, at my work we are constantly joking about it, me about how southerners are slow and my boss about how rude and obnoxious us northerners can be, its kind of a longstanding joke between us.

The stereotypes of the South persist due to the ignorant and uninformed. You can certainly go to some rural areas somewhere in the South and find a slow pace of life, uneducated people, rednecks, etc. But the South is not a homogeneous area. There are many different areas, with varied topography, different people, different economies, etc.

Greenville is very "New South." It is a relatively new city when you look at it in the context of America's lifespan. It's a growing, progressive area. There are plenty of transplants. You'll hear plenty of languages spoken because of the many large international corporations here. And yes, people are friendly to you regardless of whether you're a native Greenvillian or from somewhere else.

Visit the area for yourself. You'll love it.

Don't worry Noodles. I won't ask for you to be banned or anything. Greenville is home to more foreign companies per capita than anywhere else in the nation. That's all that needs to be said.

But, what areas are best to live in? I am looking for a diverse neighboorhood. Would you say North Main or the Eastside. Those are the two areas that we really like! By the way congrats on your house!!!
