Hello!
We are planning on moving to the Greenville/Spartanburg area from SouthWest Florida within the next 6 months and I was hoping you could help answer a question I have. We have a 70 lb. Belgian Malinois (which is a breed that is very similar to a German Shephard). We want to buy a home, but may have to rent for awhile at first. Do you know if there are breed restriction laws against this breed? He is a very sweet boy, but I know where we live in Florida, it is almost impossible to find a rental that would allow him. Thank you so much for any info you may have!
None that I am aware of. Obviously, there may be restrictions based on the specific subdivision that you go into.. City has more stringent laws than the county, but there are no breed bans. Basically, a dog has to be a nuisance or attack someone without provocation before they will do anything about it.
Travelers Rest is the only city that I know of that has any form of breed specific laws, where Pit Bulls, Chows, Rottweilers and Dobermans are considered "vicious" which basically means they have to be in an enclosure and chained up.
There are no laws against that breed, but you might find some rentals that may not allow that breed. You may do better finding a property management company that handles rentals for private owners who may allow that breed.
From my experience with trying to find a rental with a dog, it probably will be the size that will make it hard as much as the breed.
