Between Costco and Walmart there are no fewer than five Mattress Firms. Two sets of two of them are immediately next to each other, and they've been that way long enough that it does not seem they are moving from one to the other. What the heck is going on?

I'm pretty sure it boils down to low operating costs with high margins. I don't think they have more than 1 or 2 employees working at a time and the mark ups on mattresses are insane. My wife worked at a furniture store for a while, her employee discount basically got her stuff at cost or just above it. We got a $2000+ Serta mattress and box spring for 400.
2 of the stores on Woodruff they have bought out so perhaps they think its better to operate the store rather then break the lease and close it.
I said this in another thread but I believe it's a strategy they want to catch the customer on both sides of the road in these high traffic big box shopping areas before you buy from other stores like Macy's, Sears, Costco, the furniture stores etc. It's just making it easier for the customer coming and going to pull in.
I would think getting them in neighborhood grocery anchored centers closer to the residential developments would be another good strategy.
Mattress Firm bought out Sleepy's so that may be part of the reason for so many mattress stores. Perhaps when some of those leases expire one or more of the less profitable stores may close.
I bought a mattress from Mattress Firm about 18 months ago. The asst manager there told me that Matress Firm buys out competitors but stays for the remainder of the existing lease and allows the former owner/manager to remain at that location until the lease expires and the store closes. I don't know if this is true or not, but it's what I was told.
I'm pretty sure it's just because we like sleeping around.
