10 Underrated Cities for Art Lovers | U.S. News Travel

Greenville, South Carolina

South Carolina may be world-renowned for its mouthwatering barbecue, but its flourishing art scene has emerged on the art aficionado's map, with more than 70 works featured as part of Greenville's Arts in Public Places initiative. An "Orbital Trio" serves as the anchor of North Main Street downtown at NOMA Square, while nearby, you'll find "Octo 2," a kinetic, wind-powered stainless steel sculpture made up of linked stainless shapes rotating around a circular axis. Plus, there are nearly 50 museums and galleries across the city, including the largest Andrew Wyeth watercolor collection in the world at the Greenville County Museum of Art. And a number of art-focused events take place regularly, including Art in the Park and Greenville's signature event, Artisphere, a nationally recognized art festival.

Other cities listed at the link.

Bob Jones U also has a lot of art, over 400 religious, original paintings by artists such as Rubens, Botticelli, Tintoretto and van Dyck
This is recognized as one of the finest collections of European Old Masters paintings in America, and includes the Bowen Collection of Antiquities featuring Hebrew, Egyptian and Roman artifacts. There is a visual library for students majoring in art, history and humanities. The University has a satellite location in downtown Greenville at the art museum.

I've honestly never been that impressed with the Greenville art scene, but I have been to Cleveland and Cincy's art museums and they are great. The Columbus, Ohio art museum is severely underrated. Who ever is in charge there does a fantastic job.

Our son and daughter in law have graduate degrees in art, so we know the art scene in Greenville. If you base your knowledge of the art scene in a certain town by its museums, you are missing out. We have a great museum, but the art scene is so much more. Expand out to the real art scene in Greenville. You will enjoy it.

Greenville, especially for a small city, is impressive for her art, culinary scene, and natural beauty and parks.

There are but a handful of small cities which match Greenville's uniqueness.
