According to WYFF- S.C. only started doing criminal background checks for a real estate license a couple of years ago.
They only started background checks in 2014 for new applicants. They considered making background checks a requirement to renew a license but decided not to add that as a provision in the law. In this case, the serial killer admitted being convicted of a crime and wrote a letter that minimized his crime. His application was approved.
Coming out of this, I would expect the law to be changed to require a new background check at each license renewal with any felonies or sex offenses being a disqualifier for renewal.
I read something about that, I thought he was convicted in the 80's when he was 16 or so..
While what's happened here is horrible, I'm a little concerned that a crime committed as a juvenile might have lifelong consequences. And all sex offenses are not created equal. While most states are getting "Romeo and Juliet" laws in place, not all have them. His was pretty severe. Kidnapping.. But what about other 'lesser' crimes that still land people on a SOR?
The kid over at Union that stole the pics of his teacher.. That's one way they 'forced' him to plead out to lesser charges. They were charging him with an offense that would have landed him on the Sex Offender Registry for life.
