Pryde... are you me? My wife and I are literally doing the same thing. 4 days in Greenville then heading to Chattanooga for 2 days, hahah. Maybe we can share information we find!
We are back from our trip to Greenville (also Knoxville and Chattanooga) and I wanted to post a follow up to this thread. *First: we only got to spend a couple days in each area so my observations are only initial and not that well informed.
Overall Greenville made the best initial impression on us. It goes without saying the downtown is just fantastic. Driving around the city it appeared clean and more “polished” compared to the other two. However, several areas looked in need of TLC (Hwy 276 between GVL and TR for example). As you venture north toward mountains it becomes very rural-south. Traffic flowed ok but we were not in any rush-hour times. We stayed near Haywood mall. I did not find the roads that bad/degraded in the area, especially compared to my state of Illinois and much of Chattanooga, TN.
We hiked Paris mtn, Table Rock SP, and drove up to Ceasar’s Head for the view… all were great and a major draw for our relocation needs. TR was fun to walk around, see the SWT, and we had lunch at Williams Hardware Café then coffee at Tandem after going to Sunrift Outfitters to talk local trails, etc.
We took the kids to Gravitopia and D&B’s for fun in the evenings so they were quite happy about the amenities . People we encountered were generally quite friendly and inviting in SC and TN both.
My wife is still hopeful for a higher-ed job prospect in GVL but nothing solid has come up yet. This will be the major deciding factor for another visit and decision to relocate to GVL. She has an interview in Chattanooga lined up so we will give it more consideration if the job seems a good fit. We liked Chattanooga as well but thought GVL a bit better for our initial impression.
So glad you enjoyed our city, Pryde1! Yes, that area you mentioned is quite unattractive. We go to the mountains pretty often and I always dislike coming back through that stretch. I think it will change, though, just like Laurens Rd is changing closer in.
it certainly sounds like you saw some of the highlights of the area!

Yeah, there is that lol...
No town is perfect and nobody would deny how sketchy that is through there. I have heard though that there are revitalization talks in the works for it, so who's to say how it'll look in five years or so..

Stay tuned..
Honestly, I drive that way to the mts and I don't think it's that bad. To me, Whitehorse Rd is worse. I think with time, all of these main arteries, will get a face lift.

I really don't think the areas are that bad, just a stark contrast to how polished the downtown and other areas look around the city.
I felt like Chattanooga had much more run-down areas but they also have a nice downtown that contrasts these areas as well.
I can't say much about Knoxville as we didn't get as much time to explore but I did not care for the overall look of the area (very industrial) as it reminds me of my current area in Central, IL
Pryde, I'm one of the few posters that have lived in both Chattanooga and Greenville - please DM with specific questions. However, my family considers Greenville our "home" now (as we have lived here for 8 years). Have not lived in Knoxville.

Knoxville itself isn't the prettiest city. Some of the suburbs like Maryville and Oak Ridge are very nice, though. If I could have found a job in my field, I would have never left Maryville. That said, I also like this area and it's got a lot more employment in my field.
