I am thinking about getting an above ground pool in my back yard. I live in South Carolina. The companies that I am looking at say that I need a licensed contractor to install it. Does anyone know that this is true and what kind of contractor would I need.

I am not sure on that matter. So just my 2 cents: Since you said the companie"S", it sounds like more then one has mentioned a contractor, so that may be the case. I wonder if local pool companies maybe are authorized installers for those brands and/or could help? On the other hand places like WalMart and Amazon sell above ground pools you can install yourself so I question the contractor requirement...if a contractor isn't required then maybe they said it for insurance reasons?

I will also mention depending on the pool size you may be required by law to put a fence up around the pool or yard of the pool.

An above ground pool may not help the resale value of your home, so please keep that in mind. Also, your neighbors may not prefer the pool, so out of courtesy you may wish to discuss your plans with them before moving ahead.
